Hyundai HCD Line

For the past half decade, Hyundai's California-based design studio has been pumping out sharp new designs, but only a handful of the ideas ever make it into production.

Starting with the ultra-sleek, windscreen frameless, roadster body HCD-I, they began to show some promise, but eventually, the car provided nothing for the production office. The "show"-ness can be seen under the hood, having only a 2.0L inline-4 puffing 150 hp.

The smaller, much more realistic HCD-II is where the mk1 Tiburon spawned from. The car was actually more than just a concept from the beginning; they labeled it as a running prototype.

The multipurpose HCD-III with its all-wheel-drive, 3" traveling air suspension, Navitrac navigation system, retractable tailgate, and sliding roof also went too far overboard in helping Hyundai with real life automobiles. Powererd by a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4, the HCD-III found its way to 240hp. Impressive.

The Hyundai HCD-V, or also known as the Crosstour, is more of a hybrid SUV, wagon, and sedan. It gets a 2.7L V-6.

And last but not least, the all new HCD-VI roadster, also powered by a 2.7L V-6.

[B] The HCD 1 was arguably the finest piece of sports car design done in this country in the last 30 years.
It is a real shame it did not get produced.
For that matter it is sad the direction the concept went after such an auspicious beginning.
As fresh today as when it was built it could still be a major image builder for Hyundai.
As a Hyundai price point vehicle it would certainly thin the field of competition.
Few compromises would have to be made to see a production vehicle that is close to the concept.
How refreshing that would be.
