silly question, perhaps (my first keyless)

I just bought a used 2001 Elantra. So far, it's great. But I can't figure how to use the keyless entry. The remote has two buttons on it, one with a picture of a lock on it, and the other a tiny button with no picture. It's a Hyundai remote, so I assume it's the original. What do these buttons do? Sometimes I get the car unlocked but then when I open the door the alarm goes off. Other times it doesn't do anything. I tried experimenting with each button, but they weren't working all the time, so it was hard to see what was happening, if anything. Sometimes the red light on the remote would flutter, but nothing would happen on the car. Sometimes the doors on the car would unlock or lock. Today I replaced the battery in the remote, and now absolutely nothing happens. The little red light doesn't even come on anymore. What's the deal?

is the battery upside down? maybe your remote is screwed...who knows if the previous owner damaged it. take it to your dealer they could tell you in 2 seconds...and they shouldn't charge you.

Ok, I have the battery in (it was upside down). Now the remote is lighting up. So my next challenge is figuring out how the thing works. So, what's the difference between the big button (has a picture of a lock on it) and the little button?

The little one is for unlocking and the big one is for locking.

You may have to re-code the remote. Check out this link for that:

yes you WILL have to reprogram the remote for sure, everytime the battery is removed or dies the remote must be reprogrammed.

Thank you, I will try the procedure posted by xdgt03 and let you know how it went. By the way, where does the alarm fit into all of this?
