Transmission Help!!!

Ok, I have a 95 VR4 that I just purchased a week ago, the stock hydrolic clutch was crap when i bought it, it felt so bad, and it died about 25 miles down the road, HAHAHA, funny right? so anyway, we bought super beefy XTD pressure plate and a 6 puck ceramic copper clutch plate, racing bearings ect.. Got the tranny pulled, old clutch assembly removed, new one put it, and now we are stuck with the problem of realigning the transmission, we have no engine lift, and have to do this with floor jacks, hoists and rope, and basically straight man power, if anyone has done their own clutch replacement before, or dropped the tranny and put it back with the same tools or situation we have, I would seriously appreciate any pointers or hints, because mitsubishi definetely made it tough on purpose because it is insane how tiny the comparment is and with the frame position and the tranny "hump"...ughhhh if you've done this or looked at your 6 speed you know what im talking about....Please, no comments about getting a dealer to do it, estimate for a new stock clutch and installation was at $1100 bucks, HELL NO!!!! I paid $400 for a badass clutch assembly so I will never have to do this crap again, now I know why the labor cost is so high at the dealer. We'll, if you have any advice for these Texas boys, lol, no stupid south hick jokes please, unless they're good. Thanks again, Peace

when i had to replace my clutch i took it to a local tranny shop that a friend of mine worked at. they had a tranny lift holder thingy (whatever the hell they are called) and it took the guy who was doing it about 8 hours or so. he was a professional with a shop full of tools. and not just any mechanic, this place specialized in trannys (called transmition technology services or something).

he said it was the 2nd hardest job he had ever done.
now this was the 5 speed (25 spline) though. i watched the whole thing and helped where i could. the main dificulty was getting the tranny in and out of the place where it goes but aligning it took a long time too. he just had to be patient and try many times and then he finally got it. i wish i could be more specific with the details but i thought my experience might help. if you know what you are doing i would think if you just give it a bunch of tries you should get it but it will take a while.

oh, by the way, i would try to go on 3si and find a local 3/S group around there that knows a good mechanic. because i knew someone at the shop, the guy did the job for $350  but i know i gave him at least an extra $50 because the job was way harder than he thought it would be (still a very good price for 8 hours of labor!) so in other words, if you know someone, you can get a good deal.

not to be the doomsayer here, but I've run into lots of problems when it comes to cluthc installs, are you 100% certain you have the correct # of splines?...it happens, variations in production line assembly sometimes causes "off" parts..just FYI man..cpd305

Thanks for the advice man, but I know some people, but unfortunetly I dont have anymore money man, I spent it all on a super beefy clutch, because we have done clutches before, have a decent garage with tools, but just no lifts. but i just got back from another old friends garage, who lent me their tranny jack, so now we can try a few more times with much less effort I hope, ill keep you updated, still anyone with advice is still very welcome to drop my some hints, clues, links whatever, im not online to 3si, i heard you had to pay, but idk, help me out...im like one of the only people in texas with a vr4, prolly let alone a second generation.

yea, I have the correct number of splines on the shaft, its all cool, the guy i bought the car from said it was the second tranny in the car, and he had been through 3 hydrolic clutches....1 tranny, 3 clutches...can we say dumbass that can't drive....lol, the idiot was trying to tell me that the 95 twin tubo'd vr4 was carburated.....hmmm so that tells me i cant trust what he tells me, but the splines are good, and by the way, I just picked up another friends tranny jack, so no more floor jack attempts, and you said you have done this a few times, this is my first vr4 clutch, but not clutch install, how did you do it? any tricks? or hints from when you did it?

Thanks again, the lone texas VR4 ranger....not really, but close

as i said, only a very partial list. i got this from http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1999787#post1999787

and no you do not need to pay to register on 3si and ask a question but you should register and become a payed member because it is probably one of the best resources we have for our cars and it only costs 2.7 cents a day for a renewing membership. you can find 2.7 cents a day in your couch.

Wow, thanks for the useless info...I live in houston, and according to that "incomplete" list, i am the only 1995 3000GT VR4 in factory black, and and thanks for posting all of the base's and SL's in their as well, I appreciate it...really, like i said, "VR4"!!!! lol, ughhh, do your really have to go that far out of your way to be anoying? or yet again simply prove a point that there are like maybe 20-30 vr4's in texas, and maybe 10-15 in houston....hmmmm and then when you consider the split up of first and second gen. cars, and the dodges and mitsubishi's....still sounds like the texas pack pack is running pretty thin, but seeing how they only made about 150 VR4's every year from 91-99....id say the VR4 pack is running thin everywhere. Thin but strong, like i said, this is a transmision help post, and I thanked you already for your information, what little you had, but anyways, thanks for taking 5 minutes out of your amazingly busy day to find a list of cars in my area to make yourself look like a know it all smart ass on a thread, thanks pal! I aprreciate it, if you ever need someone to tell you how to put gas in your car, or change the oil, lol, im sure you can search that and find how to do that on the internet as well. As for me, we'll im going to actually work on my car and get to know it inside and out with my time, not waste it with post's and threads that get nothing but smart ass comments and remarks with gay lil smile faces...lol, peace man

are you serious???
ok man, maybe you took the laughing faces the wrong way but i thought it was funny, not trying to insult you. you said (and i quote you again):

im like one of the only people in texas with a vr4, prolly let alone a second generation

there are probably at least 70 second gen vr-4's on that list. and i would guess that only one out of every 20 vr-4 owners is a 3si member none the less on that list. and you siad vr-4's so first gens count too and that would probably put the list count up to about 100 or so (on that list alone).

also, i was trying to show you other enthusiasts that might be willing to help you with your problem in your area. i did not know where in texas you were and i did not know that there was any difference in the transmitions between 2nd gen stealth r/t tt's and 2nd gen vr-4's (oh wait, there isn't) and i certainly did not know that there was a difference in the tranny's between the different color's of vr-4's (i did not even know yours was black... imagine that) and again THERE IS NOT DIFFERENCE IN TRANNY's DEPENDING ON COLOR. same point applies with the year and again i did not know yours was a 95.

the point is that there are probably hundreds if not thousands of vr-4's in texas alone and also about 6/9ths of them are 2nd gens. you said you were just about the only one. THAT IS PURE BULL AND I GOT A LAUGH OUT OF IT AND WAS TRYING TO HELP/EDUCATE YOU. now you tacked on that they not only have to be 2nd gens but have to be 95's and black and VR-4's not TT's and in the houston area and they had to be on that list which probably represents at most 10% of the 3/S's in your state alone (again as if that mattered with the problem that i was trying to help you with).

so anyway, i tried to help but if you want to narrow down the criteria that much, fine i went through the list briefly and found these:

55. devilmanVISA - ’95 3KGT VR4 (black) - College Station
87. Iceburg470 - ’95 3KGT (black) – Houston
104. Jw461 - ’95 3KGT VR4 Spyder (black) - Garland
109. krackhead - ’95 3KGT VR4 (black) – Irving/Valley Ranch
174. smol - ’95 3KGT VR4 (black) - San Antonio

they are not all in houston but i do not know if some of those places are suburbs or close enough or what.

also, only 150 vr-4's per year is a gross underestimate. are you trying to say that 1/10th of the world population of vr-4's are not only in texas but are also on that list??? check your facts, that is wrong. i am sure after this you will say that you only ment black vr-4's made that were sold in texas to cover your ass like you did with that last post and narrowing it down to only black 95 vr-4's in the houston area when what you said was about all vr-4's of all years/colors in texas and with a specific interest in 2nd gens.

i did not go out of my way to make fun of you or something, as i said, i was trying to help/educate you. i was subscribed to the thread with that list so it took me about 1 min. to post that. it is all i can do to keep from cussing you out here but i will not because i try to be more mature than that. i suggest you do a bit of growing up yourself.

hmmmm, so just from that last fact, there were almost 2 times as many vr-4's made in 1995 in black alone as you said was about the total number made every year. i guess 95 must have been far and away their highest production year and i guess they only made black vr-4's.

sorry, i was a little pissed at your rude comments so i thought i would show you what i could acctuall find out if i acctually did do research. care to test me on any other points? you can check my source out for yourself at http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22367&highlight=VR-4+produced

also, i was trying to show you other enthusiasts that might be willing to help you with your problem in your area. i did not know where in texas you were and i did not know that there was any difference in the transmitions between 2nd gen stealth r/t tt's and 2nd gen vr-4's (oh wait, there isn't) and i certainly did not know that there was a difference in the tranny's between the different color's of vr-4's (i did not even know yours was black... imagine that)

hmmmmmm no difference between first and second gen trannys, really, only the gearing and the addition of the fact the second gen tranny Oooo umm have another gear? hmmmm, so yea, look that up and try to find another way to be an ass? lol, and btw, i stated load and clear, I believe i said, i was one of only a few people in texas with a VR4, let only a SECOND GENERATION....hmmm can you not fucking read? damn, lol, i think you need to spend a lil more time on google pal, lol, and i simple stated that out of your list of absolute all mighty beautiful cars, lol, that has been updated when? where? how long ago? Cars get bought, sold and moved everyday, not to MENTION, WRECKED, TOTALLED, btw I dont know very many people that total cars, let alone rare ones, like ooooo first gen vr4's? oh man, just leave it alone, i was wrong about a production number? you were wrong about some serious shit like car facts, and tech, please dont reply to a thread that you have no clue about in the begining, just to say some shit like, Look here, they might help you, or somebody may know what the hell they are doing, I still dont know if anyone on this forum does their own mods, or knows what they are talkin about except for young and yogs, so just chill and go sit in a corner somewhere and like be proud of you ability to look up things and information that you dont know, which seems to be a lot, except for production numbers and paint lol, that you seem to have, ummm looked up five minutes before you posted a reply on this thread, so go look up something and just leave the thread alone. lol, stick to what your good at...so, ummm hows that nothing going?

Whoooaaa hostility. Chill out man, it's your 7th post here and you're already getting into fights. You were right about the difference in trannys between 1st and 2nd gens. But chill out. Starting fights isn't the way to get help. Especially if you are trying to do it with the entire forum. Just FYI, we all do what we can. Some of us may not have the money or access for a full garage full of tools, but we do our best.. I havn't removed my tranny, so I really can't offer any advice, except for future reference...if you're a dick, people wont really care to help. That out of the way, good luck, our engine bays have no space, so I am sure that a job like that can't be easy ~ Geoff

read the first part of that again (where you were quoting me) notice how i mentioned that there was no difference between the 2nd gens. i know that the first gens are 5 speed and the second gens are 6 speed and they have different gear ratios, i have for years. ;et me quote exactly what i said and you quoted again for you:

i did not know that there was any difference in the transmitions between 2nd gen stealth r/t tt's and 2nd gen vr-4's (oh wait, there isn't)

notice the words 2nd gen in there several times. i did not mention it later on for ther color, and the cars that are in houston because i thought that i had allready made it clear that i was only saying that they are the same among second gens. fece it, you were wrong on pretty much every point and i prooved it. now you are getting way too angry and cursing at me... that is childish. tell you what, get yogs or young or both on here and see who they side with.

i will admit to one thing though, that texas 3/S list (although it has been updated in the last week or two) is not a formal list of running cars. as i said MANY times it is incomplete and i never said it was a formal "this is the one and only list of each and every 3/S ever to be in the state of texas and is in current running condition... EVER" or anything. i just took a sec to get a quick quote to show you that you were very wrong thinking that you were one of the only vr-4's in texas. let me quote it again, the thing that got you so angry and you siad it:

im like one of the only people in texas with a vr4

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! sorry deal with it.

sorry, i have studied these cars for a while and i know what you are talking about. i assure yougs and young would back me up on this as well as the many people on 3si that are MUCH more knowledgable about these cars than yogs young and myself combined. i know because i have listened and talked to the experts for years and rather than bash those that knew more than me or prooved me wrong, i thanked them and moved on. as i said before, grow up, your posts are rude and unsubstantiated at best, that is no way for fellow enthusiests to talk to each other.

for example, look at how i initially responded to your first rude uncalled for comment. i said:

are you serious???
ok man, maybe you took the laughing faces the wrong way but i thought it was funny, not trying to insult you.

NOT TRYING TO INSULT YOU, MAYBE YOU TOOK IT THE WRONG WAY, do these sound like i was trying to diss you or talk down to you. i did later because i was pissed but i allways tried to be civil about it. at most i used a little sarcasm, i did not say things like:

can you not fucking read?

not to mention that was right below where you quoted me and responded to that quote and obviously did not read it throughly at all.

you were wrong about some serious shit like car facts, and tech

show me one thing that i said that was incorrect. show me one place where i said that 1st and 2nd gen stealth tt's and vr-4's have the same tranny. read carefully, i did not say anything even close to that, and i did not use google at all.

Ok - this thread has gotten out of hand.

Sorry I haven't been here is a bit, but this shit end here and now.

ikOnone has not been leading you astray GrungeAholicVR4.

There is a large presence of VR4s in Texas. The following is the production numbers for the years. If they are devided evenly through the population of the US (given warm weather climates would have more then of these then cold ones) there would be one VR4 per 18,000 people. Texas has over 20 million people. Do the math.

Lets keep it civil.

As to the original point of the the thread.

I have never done a tranny replacement. The one time I had to have it done (which I also had the clutch replaced with an RPS) the car was under warrenty. If I were to need to do the work you need to do, I'd also be looking at www.3si.org (http://www.3si.org) http://www.stealth316.com/0-frames.htm http://www.team3s.com and google. I'm sorry I couldn't just tell you what you need to know.

There are a couple guys on the board here who have done transmission replacements. Lets hope they have the time to stop in you thread and don't get turned off by the sidebar that took place.

Thanks for the info about not being a dick, lol, yes i know these are my first few psts on here, and i am looking for help, so far I have recieved nothing but good luck and best wishes and sarcasm, I laid down some sarcasm of my own in several post on this thread that were jump upon by obviously a very bored person. I stated that is was one of the only few people in texas with a VR4, let alone a second generation. blown out of proportion. Right after that, i was the next to post a reply, i ended the post with sarcasm again, something like the lone texas VR4 ranger, not really, but pretty close. I was wrong about production numbers, never really felt a need to look them up or waste my time knowing that information that is basically utterly useless and cannot assist me in my work at all. And as for iKonone, or w/e. I did misread your comment on the first and second gen trannys, just how you skimmed over the fact of my sarcasm, but as well, i never said anything about stealth and 3000gt tranny's, let alone cars being different, because they arent, simply body style and a few bells and whistles the 3000 got and dodge didnt. But then again, if you have nothing to help me with but useless knowledge man, leave it be, and let go. I have crap for cash, im a highschool student getting money for college, as well as my car that i got a serious deal on which i was proud of, i come in here for help and tips, i get nothing but wasted time, efforts, and useless everything. I appreciate everyone go to such extremes to "educate" me about production numbers, but i was never concerned about them to begin with. Just transmision help, hence the title. Now, as far as im concerned, im not reeading anymore bull shit posts about useless info. that has nothing to do with the thread. I just wanted transmision help, but it is becomeing painfully obviouse to me that many people here simply take their car in to be serviced, where is the fun in that? well, im out, if someone knows what the hell they are doing mechanically wise, or has a good link (theres a pretty good one on stealth316.com) but its kinda limited. So no more arguements, I dont want to waste my time on them, so you can be happy about your little production numbers, and availability of cars in texas, i live here, there are not many. Cars get sold, wrecked, ect. I have lived in houston for 18 years, i have only seen maybe 2 VR4's on the road in that time. And not to mention all the road trips i have taken to south texas, north, east, west ect. Theres not many here, if there are, they are in hidding, or not running, or are gone. well, im out, now if you have info that is important, please drop it. igovert500, and yogs, are being sincible, no more argueing, my bad guys, a lil stressed, and a lil angry over the useless info. and lack of attention spans on mine and the other "parties" side. Peace

again man, i am sorry that you took my post the wrong way, i did not intend to sound like i was making fun of you. the list was primarily to show you that there are plenty of other enthusiests in texas and i thought you could possible use that list and i bet someone on it would be willing to acctually go to where you are at and physically help you, something i would have offered if i was in the area. again, i am sorry, i did not mean it as a useless fact, i was trying to help. good luck and best wishes with your car. :)

Cool man cool, sorry we got on the wrong foot, it shouldnt happen again, just under a lot of stress for the damn car and family stuff, not taking it out on people i dont even know anymore, thanks for the time and info. I finally got the splines lined up and just kicked that fucker into place. lol, its in, and we have several bolts in the tranny again, just need to fine position it so that the rest of the bolt holes line up, then i have to put my car's pretty pieces all back together, (transfer case, half shafts, disc's, turbo piping, y-pipe, ect...0 all taken out for lots of room., o yea, and the hood came off...lol. peace man, any other info would be appreciated, I will make a step by step thread about how to drop a second gen tranny in my next thread based on my experiences these last several, several days. Hope it will help anyone else on this forum, ttyl, peace guys! no hard feelings anymore.
