Front shock replacement help

How do you remove them? I tried to loosen the top when I was putting on brake pads but the shaft kept turning, even when holding the very top with a small wrench. Not very easy to get to as the upper a frame makes it very tight. Any help would be welcome. Thanks!

I just did mine last month.
I used a tight fitting deep socket on the top of the shock and with an 8 inch extension I pulled as hard as I could. Switching between a 4 inch extension ( because of limited access) I rocked the shaft back and forth until it snapped off. Good luck and watch your knuckles!
