Hello, I'm a new person to here, and excited to be here. I've come here a few times to look at people's drawings, and look at tutorials and the tips and things people are giving. I'm new at drawing, and I am interested in getting somewhat better in it. Unfortunately I don't have my scanner hooked up yet. I'll have to find it and the CD for it. I actually don't have any drawings up, I've just been one to do like an outline of a car and just circles for wheels and things. But now I'd like to step it up and be able to draw out a car and rims and make it more of a personal car rather than an outline of one. I've read a few posts where people don't think tracing is good, which is understandable. Don't worry, I can't even draw a straight line, let alone trace.. so I have to use a ruler or something straight to draw a line. :p I have a few models up in my room that eventually after I get the basics down, I'd like to draw. 64 impala, a dub city dodge ram, a viper, a benz (don't know what class), a benz SUV, a porche, and a 1969 camaro Z28. Let alone all the hotwheel type cars I have :). I got on a kick of wanting to draw, so I kept looking for places and after about 3 days of searching I came upon this luckily. I went and got a couple stencils to draw a little better. I have a couple ideas for things for people that would like to draw rims, just rims.. I'd like to maybe start out trying something like this. Well I don't want to keep going on, but I'm glad I decided to sign up and I can't wait to meet some of you :). Take care,
- Jeremy

Thank you, KustmAce. I'm already starting to be glad I signed up. Most other places I've ever signed up to be at (any topic of board) no one would say hi, or if they did it was to call me a noob and not to talk.. lol.. Glad you all are mature. I'm off to read the faq's and all the stickies so I know what I can bug.. I mean ask you :).

Thanks Zach  . I'm glad to be here. I have a question I haven't seen yet, but I haven't gone too far. Where's a good place to get other pictures of vehicles? Should I go to their company's site, or is there a few sites that seem to have a wider variety of cars? Or should I do something I just thought of and go to like a used car dealership (autotrader.com) or something like that and just search for the car and find a good pic? Thanks for the help.

welcome to the forums...
Jeremy: If you're looking for reference pics, i reccomend that you search the rest of automotiveforums.com- its a great place for finding reference pics. Google is also a good place to find them, but i think that their car pictures are kind of limited. But maybe that's just me. Personally... i get all my car reference pics from automotive forums. Good luck with your drawings. Have fun.

Welcome!
I get alot of my pictures from car magazines. Also, there is a Graphic Manipulation forum you might get pictures from. As for drawing, I think that tracing is a good way for begginers to get used to the lines and perspectives a bit better. As you progress, draw freehand and try using different techniques to see which ones you like best, as well as drawing with different angles. Can't wait to see your work!

Thank you all for the welcomes and thank you for the links. I just recently moved a while ago, and alot of things are still in storage and things, and I thought I had it with me, but I'll find it. Or else I'll get good enough and go buy another scanner :). I'm more of a 2D kind of man, I can't draw much else than a perfect side view. no 3D involved :(. That's kind of why I came here. I just made some outlines, bare outlines of a car. Kind of looks like a Honda CRX I guess. I have kind of unique ways (another word for stupid) of drawing. I just picked up a step I never thought about doing, so I guess I'm learning something :). Anyways, I want to thank you all again for welcoming me and giving me those links. I'll have to look at them to see what I like. I used to try to draw on the whole sheet of paper, but the drawing I'm kind of doing now is probably about 5 inches long, so it's alot smaller than usual. Thanks again, see you all later.

yep, tracing 3D is definately in order. After you get used to that, do simple line drawings in 3D with out tracing.

I know I haven't really looked at many tuts, but shading is probably one of my worst things about trying to draw. Like I said I haven't tried many tuts yet, but I haven't quite figured out how to make lines look right on a 3D picture. Say for instance looking at a dodge ram from the front left corner of it.. I couldn't get the top of the headlight and the hood things kind of right. I've been doodling this little car thing, it kind of looks cool. I tried making it look like there's a lowering body kit on it, but it kind of looks wierd.. Thanks again, I'm still going to try :).

Hi Kks86 and welcome , I read that you read that tracing is not really good , well trace your heart6 out ya have to learn some how and if tracing helps you to draw then have at it bud . That is one way to learn , then once you get use to how the shapes are it will become easier for you to do them on your own . So dont be afraid to trace . Anything we can help you with just ask .:)

shading really isn't that hard. There is a shading tut in the tutorial thread that you may want to look at. It would be easier to help you if you posted some pics.

It's hard to trace because I don't have anything special to help see.. Which I can actually do better using shapes and stencils.. Then little things I can put together. I don't particularly want to be the best artist around, but I'd like to draw things. I have a little rhetorical question to ask, that I think alot of you will be able to relate to when you started:
Have you ever started drawing something, say at school or something, and you'd see people start to look, and you'd hide it because you don't think it's very good? Well I do, I just want to get decent to where people won't have to ask 'what is that'? Alot of things I like to try to draw I don't like to show because it sucks personally. That's why I'm here to try to get better.
I can't really post pics yet seeing how 1 I don't have any pics cept this one I did earlier kind of. And 2 I don't think my scanner is here, if it is, then it's not here. I lost my webcam I just had too, or I'd just take a pic of it that way. Either one I find first, I'll try to use. Right now, I'm just trying to talk with people, trying to make some friends. Don't have too many of those right now. I kind of came up with an idea type thing to help me draw a little better.. Just little improvements I think. I am trying to use less space on the paper. I used to try to make the picture the WHOLE sheet instead like a portion. So my pictures would be like 10 inches long and I wouldn't like that because it took too much measuring and it was too hard for me to draw that big. So I try to quarter my sheet of paper to draw now instead. :smokin: Like I said, I'm not one of these people that think they are good, but I do try to think high of myself so I don't get bummed out of drawing. I'm just here to learn and meet new people and so far it's working for me. Like I said, I'm trying to find my dang webcam or scanner. I'm really mad I can't find my cam cause I was going to take a more recent pic of me for this chick, but you know.
One question though.. Well, a few. When I'm drawing, I like on some vehicles, the windows, to have either a rain guard or heavy tint. For something like this car I'm drawing, do you think it would look more decent to either do a grey for window tint then black for the window things, or vice versa, or use a black colored pencil for tint and black marker for the guard, or vice versa? I like the windows blacked out completely (just my style) but I would like to make it look better. I'm going to go through more posts, older ones to see people's drawings. Some people's are really good, I can't believe it. Well I'll quit yappin on so you don't have to spend another hour to read this. I'll be looking around for now, thank you.

I'm not sure about the window thing.
Don't worry about people staring at your work and making yourself unconfortable. What really matters is how you think of yourself. There is no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' art. It is all a matter of perspective.

Yea, I have alot of esteem problems, but I'm just trying to find things that makes me happy. Cars and stuff makes me happy, so I thought I'd venture into it. I won't hide a pic next time I draw it. Maybe they will say something cool instead of "what's that" . Lol.

for windows if your still wondering, if i dont have a ref pic, or just not one i like, i shade the window grey, and then the shapes on the inside of the car (seats, dash, steering wheel, etc) a darker grey, that way it gives the illusion of glass.
But, i am one of the few black and white kind of guys on here, so if you want color tips, better just search on it...

I'm not worried of the special effects. You won't believe it, but I found my scanner!!!!! I had this cool line drawing of a 2D car I kind of just free hand made.. looks like a CRX with a big scoop on the hood.. no rims, but I'll try to outline them with my marker and I'll try to get my drivers and scan it.. I can't believe I found it.. even tho my stuff sucks, it's still neat! Thanks for the help.. I'll post my first pic in this post if I can get my scanner to work.. Hopefully, I haven't used it in years.
Edit:*: I can't find my drivers for my scanner, but I found my webcam and CD, I'ma install that and try that. :)

It's kind of lame, and a bad pic, but it's not that good of a drawing, I haven't really tried to shade shade it, just colored it light blue.. No rims on it, and I didn't put any rubber on the wheels, so it kind of looks odd.. I tried being pretty proportional.. didn't try to make it a cartoon.. the rims are big, but I like bigger rims on some cars. Anyways, tell me what all I did wrong, shading I know, the black line thing in the middle is crooked it looks like, but I just kind of doodled it on.. let me know what's up.

hey man, thats pretty cool, and im not just being polite. You say you werent going for cartoony style, but it looks like you achieved it. Cartoony, or maybe, conceptual. I like it, i dont think you should put rubber on the wheels, and just do big 5 or 6 spoke rims. That would be sweet.
Um...i dunno about that hood scoop, and i mean, it looks gooa and all, i just dont know how well it works on that particular car.
I like the thick black outline within the interior, its unique, i never seen that done before. I like it. You may want to darken the window a bit more, to add some definition between the body of the car and the windows. Also, a steering wheel might add to the realism.
As for quality and shading, its pretty hard to tell. The pic is kinda blurry, so i cant really say anything about shading, though i dont even see any. As for quality, aside from the crooked door guard, it looks pretty good.
Overall i like it. Its much better than you claim it to be, and i think you have some self confidence problems...lol. I mean, thats a cool concepty looking car. If you want to know what i mean by that, check out this website (http://www.geocities.com/cardesignsketches/index.html). It has some very well drawn and colored conceptual cars posted by some one (sorry, i cant remember who) here a while ago.
I hope this helps, and keep 'em coming!

Thank you, I forgot to do the windows.. lol, it's just somethin that like took literally about 10 minutes.. long enough to draw the outline then outlined it.. I put the scoop on like everything, I don't know why.. just a habit.. Rims are hard, I'll try drawing something with just lines.. I don't shade, I just pretty much did one solid color.. My webcam is old and I had to hold the pic so yea it's blurry and dark.. lol.. Thanks for the tips.. like I said I've never really gotten into making stuff look real until now.. I'll try to draw somethin else.. I don't know what yet, but I'll try to line draw it like this one :).. Thanks.. I lost my black colored pencil or else I would of had the windows blacked or greyed out. I'll look at the link you gave me.. Thanks again.. Later.

Yo Kks86 do not short change yourself, if you do not believe in you nobody else will! Do not worry about whether or not someone else likes it or not.
Your drawing, from what I can see, is decent and it is not anywhere as bad as you would have people believe. It is just a tad bit boxy, a lot of sharp lines but you can easily mess around with that to get it right. Trust me you will like 3d drawing a lot more because you can do so much more, with 2d you are confined to up & down, left & right. Welcome to S & D!
