Fram oil filters

Hi,

I have a 92 Jeep Cherokee with approx. 125,000 miles on it. I change my oil every 3000-3500 miles using Castrol GTX and a Fram oil filter. The engine sounds very good for its mileage, and has as much kick as the day I got it (1994 I believe).

My question concerns the Fram oil filter. Is it true that these filters are just plain crap? I was reading different sources online concerning them, and a few said that they can fail and even cause engine damage! I've got two of them, brand new, sitting in my apartment right now (bought 2 plus the case of oil) and now I'm considering getting rid of the Frams and going with another, possibly Bosch.

Can anyone enlighten me about these filters and whether or not it would do me good to go with a different brand? Back in the day I used to take it to Valvoline / Jiffy / etc. to get my oil changed, but I can't imagine that they ever used a very good quality filter either.

Fram USED to make a good filter, now they are made in in china or somewhere like that. They kept the name and changed the materials they use.

A lot of companies are doing that, Florshiem (SP?) shoes used to be the best and now are make in india.

Do a we search, there are a few sites that opened oil filters and compared the guts.

I tried a Fram filter on my old '87 4.0 XJ, it cuased it to knock at idle. I changed it out in favor of an AC Delco filter and no more knock. I havn't used a Fram filter since!

I switched to a Bosch oil filter, but I still get the same level of knocking. I'll look around for an AC Delco. Unfortunately, Autozone only seems to stock fram, bosch, and mobil 1 in my area. I'll keep my eye open though.

Consumers Reports did a study on various brand filters on many applications, a few years back. Fram was on top of the ratings on almost all applications. They also did a study of various oils, changed at different intervals, the test took place on cabs in new york. Bottom line was: all magor brands were about the same, 5000-6000 miles is soon enough to change oil, not 3000 (a ripp-off). And that synthetic, STP, Duralube ect. were all hype and showed no benefit in there million mile test. Herb

Now i don't know about fram oil filters and all this other stuff. I just know that the ONLY oil filter I trust is WIX. They're farely hard to find, however everywhere I've gone I've found that there is at least one store in town the will carry WIX.

Fram filters work perfectly fine, though as banks_37 said WIX are good and they are. WIX are the best but they are not hard to find, every NAPA filter is made by WIX.
