2003 LT Instrument Cluster Died Today

I don't know if there is any bearing or not, but this occured while the oil was being changed.

Dropped the truck off this morning and the instrument package was working. After waiting for a bit, my mechanics young helper came out and said that I did not bring enough oil (I supply them the SynTec and filter) and that the oil guage was reading zero.

Went out in the bay and sure enough, it was reading zero. so was the temp guage, amp meter and tach. The speedo was also out, I found out as I drove away.

The gear selection indicator works, as well as the odometer. The driver information display works also. It is just the instruments you use when driving that are not working.

This shop has serviced my vehicles for 25 years, so it is not a matter of distrust. They say they looked for all possible causes that they could think of, I believe them. The fuses checked out and no loose wiring connectors were noted. :banghead:

Everything is still under warrenty - she just rolled over 32,000 in 16 months - but I am curious to know if anyone else has had this problem and what the possible cause and/or fix might be.

I await your responses. Thanks and keep the shiney side up.

Since your truck is still covered under the factory bumper to bumper warranty, take it to the dealer..the repairs will be done at no charget to you.
Most likely this may be a power moding problem to the cluster.

Thought I'd post an update to my problem.

I physically pulled the two fuses listed as perainign to the instrument cluster and they visually checked out good. Plugged them back in and walked away from the truck. This was on Saturday.

On Monday morning I started the engine on the way to work, and Lo and Behold, I have instruments. It is now Wednesday and they are still working just fine.

I talked to my mechanic and he said he used a test light to check out the fuses - did not pull them. It is just a WAG, but either I renewed the electrical contact of the fuse(s) or reset something in the instrument cluster. Let's see how long it holds up.

At least it is documented by the dealership. I had it in today for a clunky steering system and got it put into the computer about the loss of instruments.

BTW, the clunking steering supposedly was a steering sector out of adjustment. Sure sounds like a loose tie-rod end or something similar. Will find out tomorrow on the way to work. One exit ramp has more than enough bumps to highlight any loose steering components.

Thanks for your interest in my problem. This forum does have some good stuff in it.
