eclipse recall?

did you all get that recall letter from mitsubishi about that steering defect or whatever the shit they were trying to say.

judging from the mods i have done air filter, BOV, downpipe, upper ic pipe, battery, exaust, bodykit, rims, suspension. will they let me into their factory and replace the defected part?

i havent got shit yet and i have 2... who knows, when did you get the letter?

like 3 weeks ago. they told me to stop by the nearest dealer to get that part replaced. it's for all eclipse i think from 91 all the way to 99. and some galan too.

i don't remember the exact content but i think it's basically the part where the steering axel is connected to where it leads to a ball which is the part that needs to be sealed or replaced. somehow they discovered that if the water gets inside that part it can rust and eventually separate the axel and the ball and lost the ability of steering. YEAH!!.. how nice is that!!

LMAO... oh shit, i was out for a drive in the RST the other day just to keep everything workin and the battery charge and when i turned th corner it made this god for saken sound that just ran shivers up my back! well i pulled the wheel off and looked at it and the joint looked fine but thats where the noise was comming from... well to solve that problem i put some thick ass tranny fluid on it and in a matter of seconds it went away... sorry if i am ghetto but thats the first thing i saw! and it works wonders i'm telling ya! well i havent got anything yet so who knows!

well... that's good for YOU.. but what about me.. i don't do my own work. do you think they'll after all let me into the dealer and get that fixed?.. provided that i have all these mods installed.

yeah i got that letter to. i think if its a recall they have to fix it for free no matter what....but im no expert

lol, "i dont do my own work" he dumped some lubricant on the joint. not exactly the most technical steering modification. If it's not sealed, it wont last forever :) good thinking though.

ok.. just came home and read the letter again. it says:

"MItsubishi Motor sales of america, inc. has determined that a defect which relates to vehicle safety exists in certain 1994-1998 Galant, 1995-1999 Eclipse, and 1996-1999 eclipse spyder vehicles. the lower lateral arm ball joints may be subject to premature wear as a result of water intrusion. this leakage could possibly be from a cut or torn boot or from leakage at other areas of the ball joint. should moisture enter the ball joint, extraordinary wear could occure. in the worst case, the ball joint could separate from the steering knuckle. this could result in loss of steering control and case a crash without prior warning. "

ahhhhhhh it is not a steering recall it is the ball joint recall. This is a old recall, i guess the previous owner did not take care of it or they only "inspected" it before and now they are replacing them.

Get this taken care of NOW.. I MEAN NOW. Who knows how messed up they could be...or they could be fine. Just goto mitsu and they should do it for free.

I am going to go there again, and make them replace it again.

Yea. It is a safety recall so they have to. And if they say no, try another dealer. And then if they both say no call mitsu's 800 #. But neither of them should say no.

I got the recall, it was done by the previous owner.
its the control arm or something like that, its a recall, its free, they have to do it. just take it to any dealership.

for the others not sure if there recall was done or not, take the VIN to any Mitsu dealership and they'll look it up

Just to reinforce a point that was already made... If its a SAFETY recall, the dealer has to fix it regardless of your mods. If they dont, inform them that you will be asking the NTSB what your rights are in this matter. They should hop to it right quick ;)

I've replaced those control arms several times now. Seem like every 40k miles or so one is bad. I keep a few spares in the garage (one of the perks of having a brother who works for mitsu). Keep an eye on those. In other threads on this site I described how exactly to test them for failure.

i guess i am still good then.. only mid 27K miles :grinno: but i'll stop by tomorrow anyway..

just out of curiousity.. how do you test them for failur.

Hey I Think That Recall Is Old Cuz I Just Bought A 98 Gs And Called The Dealer To Ask If Any Recalls Were On The Car And He Said That The Ball Joint Was On Recal But My Car Had It Done Already So I Think The Dude Who Owned This Car Before Me Had It Done Therefor It Must Be Older Than Three Weeks Ago....ok...coo

i just bought my 91 eclipse gs last june 2003 how will i know or find out if my prevouse owners did the service and safty recalls? does anyone know??

Call mitsu's 800 and ask them to see if you have any outstanding recalls and give them your vin and they will tell you.

:)... i just got it done today. took them 45 mins to replace the ball joint. turned out that it was a little cracked. :eek2: they said the new one has been redesigned and should last for a very very long time. :) so you should get that taken care of too. i called the 800 number and had them checked before i went in and that's how i found out that the previous owner (my freakin friend :chair: ) didn't get that take care of.

They said the same thing the last 3 times they redesigned it though :D
