Engine Swap
Dragon GTR

I just bought a 91 GTS-4 and I was thinking about swapping the RB20DET for a RB26DETT. I want to yake to the States with me when I go but this guy told me MotoRex wouldn't legalize it because its not the original motor. I'm just wondering if thats true. If not could anyone tell me how much that would cost and what exactly is involved in the swap.

wow you're asking a price on something that is volital in price to start with. Bascially a complete engine can be bought second hand for around $3500 USD if you know where to look. Then you are looking at an ecu, fuel system, intake system including front mount, wiring looms, etc. to match as your ecu, and loom is completely different.

So, sell your GTS-4, buy a GTR, and be done with it:)
You can import the GTR, you will not be able to import the GTS-4.

Well, I've never heard of not being able to import it because of a different engine, unless they mean an engine that the Skyline was never equipped with. They are able to import vehicles equipped with the RB20, 25 or 26, so that shouldn't apply. Before you make a decision based on what you heard, contact Motorex and find out the truth. No one but Motorex knows what can and can't be done.
As far as the cost, being in Japan you need to talk to local junkyards, tuners, etc. Asking people who are primerally in countries other then Japan, your going to get drastically different prices then what you'll pay there. Also, you're going to be able to get all the parts required much easier. You'll need everthing Razor said, also, I don't know, but the tranny's or diffs gearing may be different.
Also, I know there were a few GTS4's that were 2drs, but all I've ever seen were 4drs. If yours is a 4dr, I'll foreworn you, I did contact Motorex about mine and I was informed that they won't touch it bacause they never converted/tested 4drs. Like I said, don't take my word, contact them and find out! The fact is, there is about 95% mis-information on the net and forums about getting Skylines in the US and about 5% truth.

I understand how disheartening the whole legalisation process can be for us living in the states. It really does suck for us. And you are right there is a lot of misinformation that is posted on all the different sites, albeit that most of the time it tends to be corrected after someone post the bad info.
To tell you the truth, I would love to see your car in the states. Its a cryin shame that the gov't bureaucratic BS has to be involved when it comes to vehicle importation.

it's a double edged sword though. Down here in New Zealand the R32 Gts/GTS-T/GTS-4 and some R33 models are so damn cheap and common every man and his dog can have one. Hence you get all the little immature boy-racer types buying them and driving around like maniacs (dirt cheap car with lots of power). Gives the rest of us greif by giving the skyline a bad image. THe general public has the image of a skyline (wether or not it's r32/33/34 or GTS/GTS-T/GTR, it's all the same to them) being some hoon person who goes out to the illegal drags and terrorises normal drivers.
