alternator question

I have a 96 tacoma v6. I was wondering if the truck will run if the wires on the alternator are off? not the large charge wire but the 3 that clip in on top. The reason why I'm asking is because I bought a high amp alt. and thinking about a externel regulator. So I need to know if the computer relies on the alt to run.

one of your three wires comes from your "battery" light on the dash and gets power from the igniton switch, this is used to "wake up" the voltage reg. and if there is a problem with the reg, it will ground this wire and turn on the light. one of the other wires is a voltage signal comming from your batt. so the volt reg. knows if the voltage is low or high, to allow it to turn on and off the reg. i am not sure about the third one, it could be a input to the ecu, but im not sure. Hope this helps :smokin:

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting a external reg. so those wires shouldn't matter right?
