I cleaned out the EGR valves over the weekend and got a CEL with code 1404 after a couple of days. Car seems to be running much better than before. I bought a Universal Code Reader OBDII, and that is what it read. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

BTW, the code was cleared by the OBDII.

I had a CEL too when I cleaned mine. I drove the truck for abour 15 minutes after cleaning and the light would flash at me. After my next restart it turned off. I wouldn't be to worried about it.

1404 is a stuck egr valve. Maybe you didn't clean it well enough? did you try to move it a bit with a screw driver?

Like Ryan says, you want to make sure you work the EGR valve pintle up & down during the cleaning process to make sure it moves freely. The EGR valve itself rarely, if ever goes bad. It's just a simple solenoid with one moving part (pintle). Many shops just want to replace them ($$$) because they are used to the old vacuum diaphragm type EGR valves, where the diaphragm would blow out & the whole valve assembly would need to be replaced. The electrical EGR's that the newer zu's have should easily last the life of the truck. You just need to clean the plumbing regularly (very common in ANY modern, EGR equiped vehicle).

I just cleaned the two holes with a whole bottle of GUMOUT carb cleaner. Do I also need to clean the EGR unit itself? And how should I do it? The code 1404 on my Creader manual saids it's "EGR Solenoid Control Faulty."

Yup, spray out the inside of your EGR. I sprayed mine out (I but I didn't try to move the springed pintle, didn't know at the time), and then let it set for about 30-45 minutes. I was a bit afrid to hook it right back up and start it up, since you have electrical stuff.
I'm thinking about taking some more screen shots of my cd manual and put together a write up this weekend.

How do you take EGR apart? It looks like a single unit.
