slow starting vortec

I've got a 96 silverado 5.0 that is slow starting. This problem just started a couple of weeks ago and has been doing it often. It starts after a few seconds of turning over(spins over fast), once started it idels real rough at a low rpm (~500) for about ten seconds then returning to its normal idel speed. Driving performance has not been affected in anyway that I can tell. I took a fuel pressure reading from the shrader valve to see if any thing looked abnormal. When the key is turned on I'm seeing 60psi, running I'm seeing 52 psi, under flucuating throttle I'm seeing 50-60psi, and after the engine is shut off it starts bleeding down pretty slow to16psi after 15min. I have recently changed my plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator, if it drips gas, replace it. It is on the fuel rail, drivers side. I had the same problem. Very easy to replace.

assuming you checked your battery?

your fuel pump is getting ready to blow. the relay is probably already dead and your spinning the motor enough to start it on the oil pressure fuel pump switch (yeah, there is one as a backup). you can replace the relay but it will blow again. check your voltage being generated as you drive - is it up a little from normal? thats another indicator...the fuel pump operating inefficienctly takes more electricity to turn so the electrical system responds with more volts. if you are just going to be around home and got AAA, wait till it blows. may be inconvenient to start it and you may get stuck out somewhere waiting for a tow. try not to keep too much gas in the tank as it will make it harder to do the pump. I got caught away from home and had to take to to chevy on my '97. cost me $780 for a new one installed. Lot cheaper to do it at the mechanic of your choice or do it yourself.

Since your fuel pressure drains pretty quickly after you shut the engine down and it is hard to start.

I would tend to believe you have a fuel injector that is leaking fuel into the intake.

This would cause your fuel pressure to drain off and would also 'flood' your engine causing it to start a little harder.

Go to your GM dealer and pick up a can of GM fuel injector cleaner. This stuff is really good to clean the carbon off of the tips of your injectors. Use about 1/3 can for the next three tanks of fuel and see if that helps.

If it doesn't seem to help, your dealer can check to see if you have an injector that is leaking off.

I finally fixed the problem. It was the fuel pressure regulator, it had an external leak and was flooding the engine. Easy but time consuming fix.
