Do they not seem respectable or trustworthy? Maybe you should try another shop? Is that $1200 complete rebuild or patch. How many miles on your rig? Sounds like the direct clutch isn't holding well. Which can be attributed by many things. Like excessive clutch pak clearance, excessive band clearance, low boost pressure in rev, worn valve body, stuck shift valves, side loading of direct clutch drum, center support sealing rings, and so much more. 95% of the time there is no cheap fix for these, or any tranny for that matter. You can pull the hose off the vacuum modulator, if ATF runs out, then renew it. That usally only effects the shift from 2nd to 3rd gear(direct). But give that a shot first. Don't waste any money on a service or flush. Reverse band not adjustable. Good luck!
