I hope you didn't get the 3.73's already. I would recommend at least 4.10's. I got the 4.10's (or is it the 4.11's) from SLP and I can actually use my 6th gear now. I have heard of guys with something like 4.55's in their TA's and they still do 150 so I am thinking about getting them. BTW if you have a warranty use it to change yer ring and pinion for free. Thats what I did and it worked out great! GL and happy pony-smokin!

i have an automatic so would you still suggest 4.10? you mean if i have a warranty i can go to my dealership and tell them to change my ring and pinion to the new 3.73 or 4.10 for no charge?

keep in mind that the prior suggestion of 4.10's or 4.55's will murder any gas mileage you thought you had- 3.73 is a pretty close to perfect mix of low and top end power and spreading it around for both performance and practical in terms of gas consumption.

also the comment was made about "using 6th gear"..... you'll need a 6spd for those to be reasonable to for street use- a 4spd auto won't be very practical with 4.10 or higher......

just my:2cents:

just to throw my 2 cents in, if you plan on beefing up your car alittle you might want to go with something alittle lower than 3.73, the diffrence between stock and 3.73 is very minimal. At least it was with my bird

well yours (driftking) may have had a gear close to 3.73- but not all of these cars come with the same gears... it all depends on year, model, auto/maual transmission. there are a lot of different gears that are put into f-bodies stock.

sorry for the bad info then figured they would all be close to 3.73 since he has a auto too.

so yea does anyone wanna try and answer my question? when i cruise at 60 mph with automatic transmission my rpm is at about 1800 so would u think i have 3.23 or 2.73?

i really couldn't tell you, there's others that could but im not sure about it. all i can tell you is that 3.73 is the best for all around applications- if you want to murder everyone off the line and go up through the gears quick and you don't mind lower gas mileage and cruising on the freeway at 80mph and at prolly around 3500rpm (it's a guess, but basically a lot higher rpm): go with 4.10 or higher- there's nothing wrong with that. but personally im putting 3.73 in my '97 Z28 and i know people that have used 3.73's in the past and are really pleased with them. it's all perosnal preference and application.

oh i know i def want 3.73 without a doubt now but thing is....its alot more pricey if i need to buy a 3 series carrier as well with the gear and if i already have one, things would be a lot easier for me.

exactly how do you get the dealership to change the pinion thing for free what do you tell them

violator6090

i guess you tell them that the stock one feels messed up and that u bought a new gear and want them to replace it under the warranty

In my '88 T/A, I've got a 700R4 and I cruise at 70 at 1800 with my stock 2.73's. Since the 2 auto tranny's are similar, I would guess you might have 3.23's.

well i really hope so cause that would save me a significant amount of money not replacing the 2 series carrier...thanks for your input

well i found out from my dealership that i have a 2 series carrier with the 2.73...buts it no problem i will just buy the 3.73 strange to fit with that, im sure i will notice a big difference from 2.73 to 3.73

I bought my 6-speed Formula used with a 4.10 in it already. I can't imagine it with anything less. I've heard that a 3.73 is a high as you want to go with an automatic. Wherever you get the gear swap done, make sure they KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING! Those gears have to be properly shimmed down to thousandths of an inch to mesh properly. Whatever bonehead put mine in didn't do it right. It works but has a lot of noise and will eventually fail. I think all gear swaps can result in some noise, so be prepared for that.

i got my 3.73 installed as well as hypertech power porgramming with 160 thermo. It is a massive difference from the 2.73 obviously, and i love it, my car is so much faster than before

for a v6 firebrid which one would be better the 3.42 or 3.73 gears. which one has better top end speed. how much worse would the gas milage be between the two different gears.

From what I have been reading, for street use and still being quick with good gas mileage, 3.73 are the optimal gears. The ones above 3.73 might be trickier to drive on rain, let alone snow.
I hope this helps.
