I recently purchased a 98 LT with 113,000 miles. The wife called to my attention a buzzing noise from the rear end. Upon inspection, it sounds like a small electric motor behind the license plate. I'm guessing it's the fuel pump. Does the fuel pump run all the time and make a noticeable buzz?

Fuel Pump should run just a few seconds when you first turn the key on and will be on anytime engine is running. Do you have an aux heater in the rear??

I'm in the same boat- '98 LS with 108k miles and the fuel pump whines/buzzes. From all of the resaerch I've done this is "the excepted norm" on our model years and a few others. from what I've read etc... it seems that well over half of them do it. I was all ready to get a new pump and replace this one but am fully convinced that it is "okay" and who's to say if I replace it the new one wouldn't be the same way; especailly at a "dealer cost" of $395+ (part# 25314341, Delco# MU132)for the pump alone, but there are/were some on Ebay etc... a little cheaper

P.S. If that's not a good enough answer for you then search using the key word "pump" in this forum alone and you can get more detailed elsewhere, if it helps put your mind at ease.

I have a 2000 and it does it on that too. I guess it depends on how loud it is. At the suggestion of someone on here, I replaced the fuel filter since a clogged filter can add to the strain on a pump and cause it to wear out faster. Also, I've been told not to let your fuel tank get below 1/4 tank. that's just a safety precaution because if you run your tank empty, you'll burn up the fuel pump for sure.
