okies....
what are the advantages and disadvantage of these 2 types of engines???

rotary = very little HP lost due to valvetrain motion. Revs can be high as hell without anything floating or bending or snapping. Very small and light weight. Better center of gravity.
cons - can it be as reliable as a high hp piston motor? some say yes, some say no. I know i've seen more 10 second rotary cars explode at the 1/4 than piston ones, but that could be many many different factors. You're also limited to a very small displacement motor.
Piston - They make more sense...lol Only b/c i've never dealt with a rotary lol. More displacement = more torque. I guess you could say the seals will last longer on the pistons, but again, that's all up to mods, tuning and how you drive it.
They both have their ups and downs, weight...displacement...revs...torque...rotational inertia...longevity...headgaskets...etc etc

Rotary engines does one combustion per rotor and cranshaft revolution. This is like a two stroke engine and gives it an advantage in power/displacement.
RPM of an rotary engine isn't really that high, since they do more combustions it will sound that the rpm is higher than it really is. The apex seals sets limits in rpm.
Disadvantages are mainly a low thermal efficiency and high exhaust emissions.

Hey i have to write a 4000 word essay and i want to do it on why a roatary is better than other interal combustion engines. Like 2 and 4 stroke also boxer inline and V shapes. Are there any books or websites i should check out. thanx in advanced.

what are the advantages and disadvantage of these 2 types of engines???
piston motors: hyper versatile, run forever, easy to fix
rotaries: explode into a ball of fiery death when started.
the choice is clear.

the rotary isnt better than piston engines, it's just a very ingenius alternative.

well the essay topic would be Will rotarys be the engine choice of the future? (only internal combustion though)

It's impossible to reach the same efficiencies with a rotary as with a piston engine since the specific cooling areas are much larger. Therefore their use will be quite limited to high power/weight where higher fuel consumption and exhaust emissions is acceptable.

Look an engineer friend of mine tells me that its a good idea so ill go with it. I trust him more thatn u k. know is u know websites or books id apreciate it.

well your engineer friend sounds like a jackass. And i highly doubt he's MIT quality if he's around with people who can't seem to form coherent sentences.

Look I’m not going to argue with u. if u want to help great otherwise fuck off. My problem with spelling and coherence is due to me being slightly dyslexic, and having learnt three languages (Spanish my mother language, Dutch cause I live in Holland and English because I go to an American school) as I grew up. I’m also taking I.B. SL German. I never said this guy went to MIT. So were u getting that from? Just because he has a different opinion doesn’t mean he is wrong.

Molina you came in here asking for information. You got it. Why are you getting upset that the information you got is against your beliefs.
And btw Saab Johan is by far one of our most knowledgeable members and an engineer so if I were you I’d listen to him. Plus he posts here just as a public service, he doesn't get paid for his time to help his fellow members. So please do be more appreciative of his information

He didn't say he was from MIT, he said that he wasn't MIT quality. Maybe you should focus more on the more important languages, eh? ;)

U americans think u rule the world. MIT the best school? i shit on that school. this guy went to the college in athens which has one of the hardest entrance exams in the world. I was thinking of studying in an american university, but if this is the bigotedness i will encounter i have second doubts. Look i apoligise to saab but i think he has to agree with me that the wankel does have plus points. A good example of that is the engine in the new RX-8.

no really? i was being a sarcastic asshole, but i guess it's hard to convey that over text without coming off as a complete asshole.
all i'm being asshole about is that this cat comes on asking for info. for some essay. Well..he gets the info, then says we're all wrong b/c 1 person he knows is an engineer and says the wankel is much more effiecient than the piston engine.
I mean, if he already knew the answers he wanted to get, then why post up in the first place?

oooooh boy. well first off...YES WE RULE THE WORLD. Didn't you get that idea when we busted up Iraq? I mean c'mon dude...bigger is better and badder! :sarcasm again:
And yes, this is the bigotry you will encounter over here. The bigotry of people telling you why and how one engine differs and has advantages over another. You're the pig headed ass who knew which engine was better in the first place, there was no reason for the question. Maybe you should have asked..."I know the wankel is better than any other engine, just tell me how"
And we ALL SAID THE WANKEL HAS PLUS POINTS. But numbers don't lie and the fact that the efficiency was brought up a few times is A HUGE limiting factor.

Oh, and do you think you could make it into MIT? Yes?
