gotta love AWD launches...lol

but it looks like the SS was catching up in the end. I wonder how they'd hold up in the 1/4 together like that

Yeah the rexi's launch like crazy but in a long run race the camaro woulda had it easily considering they have a top speed of over 160mph. In a race as short as the 1/4 though i think the STI would have him but it would be very close.

yeah, in my opinion....no offense to you camaro/vette lovers...but chevy's seem like junk...at least all the ones i have rode in are. i drove a 01 vette Z06 that was turbocharged with over 550 hp to the wheel. that thing sounded/felt like it was about to fall apart. sure it was fast but i drove a 03 cobra and have a 02 wrx..and they are both more fun than that Z06. just my opinion.

The camaro will lose pretty much anything after quarter mile to the STi cause of the 4.10 gears, it doesnt have any more top end, bad thing about high gears like that on cars that cant rev too high. The camaro may start catching up but it wont have much more pulling power once it hits a higher gear cause of the loss to its mph.

that is true....but it does also have a six speed tranny so it's high end will still be in the 160-170 range probably. my friend has a 97 cobra with 4.10 gears and i've witnessed it going 160 and he still had a little bit of room on the redline. so i dunno....that's just a logic guess

Unfortunately, you're misinformed...4.10 gear will take it screaming to over 140mph with ease.

yup, I was just about to say that. can an STI even reach 165-170mph top speed??? I've had mine up to 155mph and it was still going strong and its a normal z28. :iceslolan

The STi is speed limited to 147. By removing the speed limiter, it would run out of 6th gear at about 155-160. If the final drive was changed, it would probably top out at about 165-170.

When I had the car on track, my top speed was about 115 in the middle of 5th, and it still pulled strong up to that point. The longest straight at the track I was on is just under 1/4 mi. For perspective, my Miata (with higher corner exit speed) was at 95 in the same place.

I believe with the stock 6-speed gearbox and stock final drive in the SS, top speed is reached in 5th gear because 6th is too tall. It's basically a highway cruising/EPA milage gear.

yaaaaah...and owning the slowest model integra and throwing money on engine mods only to still be peg legged at the line and get creamed by the slowest Impreza model is stupid

whats with the personal attack? i bought my car by myself, and i am in college. i was saying the launch that high up was stupid, as in sick or crazy.
-i rode in my friends ss. he can chirp in 3rd gear no prob. i love the sound of them.

Was this a personal race, as in you filmed it so you know the mods? Just wondering. I don't think the SS was catching up at all, I think the gap maintained itself pretty well from watching the tape. The SS shut down too early IMO, I think he just gave up because he wasn't going to pass the STI without killing themselves on the street. Hard to mess with those AWD launches...

I'll agree that launch on the STi was massive, granted you can do that but how many times? the tranny sure as hell can't support it can it? I'm not up todate on on their tranny's, just curious is all.

I know right now with the motor I have I'm pushing the damn tranny limits :banghead: and I'm sure when I go through the gears leaving trails of black marks in 3rd and 4th aren't to good :lol2: that's the only down fall I have with my tranny damn FWD setup moved to the back, transverse BASTARDS!

Yeah it didn't look to me like the SS was even close to catching up. Good race.

every thing i have read is that the STi's six speed is damn strong... got to worry about the WRX's 5 speed tho. i would think that STi would live quite a long time even with the hard ass launchs

Yeah you would think so. My friend messed his tranny up by launching all the time like that.

As stated above, this is slightly misinformed...

I'm installing my 4.10 rear this coming weekend. I have a 4 speed auto, and I'll still be able to hit around 150ish mph with the .7 overdrive. It won't be a very weak overdrive either, as it'll have about a 2.87 final drive... :)

You also might wanna consider how much more the AWD tranny eats power at high speeds in the STI. I've raced a couple of them. Not just fly by races either. We had them all set up, etc. This was before I had the nitrous, stall converter, exhaust, etc. Main mod was headers and intake at the time... He killed me off the line, but I passed him up by 95mph in every race...

The 4.10 gear will get up to 140 yeah..But not in the 1/4 mile probably just barely in 1 mile. Gear like that are more for the 1/8 mile. And 4.10 is a low gearing not a high gearing.

red hot- your putting 4.10 gears in, your final drive will be 4.10 your final gear will be 2.87

Just some performance #s from a WRX (the STIs little bro.) owner.
145 mph. Still had 1000 left on the tach. (looong straight road) (Stock!!)
1/4 mi [email protected] mph (before uppipe and retune)
I have not run it at the track since uppipe, retune, and new clutch. (got 65,000 mi out of it with some drag and alot of auto-x racing) I think my 1/4 mi time will be a little lower now.
I've raced a lot of domestic muscle. Won some lost some.
I like the fact that I still get 21 mpg no matter how I drive it.

That SS got owned, period...... I counted atleast 2 car lengths, and that's being pessimistic. after the 1/4 mile of course the SS will find it's legs and beat the STi. Looking the the vid I don't think the guy heated up his DR's properly (Which I was also guilty of w/ the Z28 i use to own). 1/4 mile wise though, that STi is gonna be hard for the SS to take.
