I have a 1999 silverado with a 5.3L in it. Im looking to gain some more horses. One of my friends had a truck like mine. He had a bunched of bolt-ons. He told me to get a different cam and it would open my engine up. Does anybody know what kind of cam I need? Any suggestions? My truck is a 2wd street truck. I need something that will bring out the horses.
Thanks

You can install the cam out of an ls1, or better yet, a zo6 corvette cam out of an ls6. Either one of these would give you a nice gain in horsepower. They will also work with your current tune. There are also several other options on cams for our trucks. It really just depends on what you want, low end or high end.

A Z06 cam would work? Im lookin for some low end torque. How much do you think it would cost to drop in a Z06 cam? How many horses would it give me?

A z06 cam would work great. The motors in the new trucks have the same design, so in other words, the motor internals, as well as the transmission parts(stall, shift kits, etc.) will work with each other. The same cam upgrade you can do to an ls1 350, you can do to your truck. You would probably have to change out the springs. The cam would cost around 100-150. I don't know how much someone would charge you to install it. Just ask around. You should be looking at about a 25-30 hp increase. You would probably want to get the truck tuned, because you would want to raise the shift points up to around 6000 or more. You would probably lose alittle down on the low end, but you would definately see your gain on the top end. Just let me know what you want to accomplish with the 5.3(low end power or high end) and I'll give you a good cam selection.Do you have any mods done right now? If not, I could give you a few ideas to get started with. Just let me know.
ChevyWade, I'll check with some of my buddies and see what they're running to get the low end power. I'll let you know what they suggest, because I don't have that much experience with the 350.

Right now I'm looking for low end torque. I found a Crane Cam that is for an LS1 that would work in my 5.3L. I currently have a Hypertech III on my truck. It did pretty good for performance. In about 3 weeks I plan to put on a Volant Cool Air intake and remove the screen on my MAF. I've heard of a lot of people doing this with their MAF. Do you think it is a good idea?
I'm also having problems keep my tires from spinning when I take off from the line. I am about to purchase some Toyo Proxes S/T so I'm sure that will help.
One of the things that I am trying to do is make my truck able to beat a Lightning, without using a supercharger or nitrous. Any ideas on what I should buy? Maybe a new cam, intake, headers, and some electric fans.
