I think he meant headers and intake with cold air box... cuz that could be had for $200 I'm pretty sure... if not you could do it for like $220 for sure

Soyo where are you getting you prices from? What headers are you talling about? What intake are you talking about? $200 sounds a little to cheap to me for that.

you can get an apex intake for $95 and bonez intake for $100, didn't look for headers, but I figured you could find a header for $120

Well i don tthink you can find a decent header that will be under 120$. Especially if you find an intake for $100. But i guess it is possible.
But from the sounds of it you should just look at an exhaust, which may be had for 200 but most likley more. Good luck with it tho.

i was wondering how exactly to build a custom cold air box around the intake if i got one. does anyone know of a website with directions on how to make one? if not, i guess i could figure out how to build one, but guidance would be appreciated

umm... where is there an exhaust for $200? I HIGHLY doubt that, unless your talking about a muffler, or an axle back exhaust, which wouldn't work because you would need 2 mufflers or 2 axle backs since its dual, or you'd have to replace the Y pipe out an that will cost more than $200. but I'd really love to see a cat back exhaust for $200 or less... really, show me where. acctually, find one under $400 and I'll be pretty impressed. and at nopi.com they have headers for about $140 I think(forgot the price) so I was a bit off, but still, it isn't a whole lot more, and you can save up anout 40-50 and get a header next, just my thoughts.

Im not talking about a brand name exhaust. Im talking about making one. Its not very hard. You can pick up the pipe from a local muffler shop. A couple flanges and bits and peices. I made one for a friend who had a TII and its better than alot of the aftermarket stuff, sounds very good. Although i made it from his turbos back, and made a custom cat flandge for him as well. But it would be wuite cheap to build your own, all you need is a welder and a hack saw.

i wouldnt trust myself with a welder that close to a gas tank :grinno:

my uncle is a mechanic who has been in the job for over 20 years. he deals with a lot of rx-7s and can make a custom exhaust for me that will work as well as any 600 dollar system out there

well if he can make u an exhaust system, why not have him make an intake as well? that's even easier to do than exhaust. all you ahve to do is buy the metal and the cone filter. hopefully you have a nice uncle, and he'll do the work for free, or show you how to do it. either way, go for exhaust first, and then if ur uncle feels like being extra nice, go buy some sheet metal, and i think it's supposed to be 3 inch aluminum tubing... i could be wrong. cut the sheet metal to make an airbox, and also try to see if you can build some type of heat shield near the intake tubing, that way the air doesn't heat up as much when it goes near teh engine. good luck!

don't make a heat shield around the tubing, just using ceramic paint on the inside and out, some of that stuff is protectant for over 600 degrees, there is probably some expensive kind that is even more, but you wouldn't need more than that.
and get an intake first, not exhaust. sure exhaust sounds and looks cool, but if your car isn't bringing in a lot of extra air like it would be with an intake it wont be much of an advantage to get an exhaust, plus an intake would be good for your engine as well, more so than exhaust, just wait and get exhaust second.
