just honestly curious (no no i'm not going to do this unless needed) but how much would a new metro engine be? under $1000? just want to know for fun

yes, they are cheap, well i dunno about a NEW motor. i picked one up that had low miles on it for fairly cheap, well under 1k.

nice..people make fun of metro motors but a plus about them is that if something goes wrong within the motor, it is easy and cheap to fix. replacing a 3 cyl. is cheaper than a 8cyl for sure!!

If the motor isn't smoked, you can rebuild it, all new bearings, new headbolts, rebuilt head(skim it!), hone job, and new rings for about $400. A rebuild after the motor is out only takes a couple of hours if you're a pretty good mechanic.

that is a plus about having a metro...very cheap even if something major goes. my engine is decent and looks in good shape for being a 91 metro (hatchback) i bought it used for $500 and the only thin wrong with it is that glitch with the tranny

I did a full rebuild on a 83 metro engine ( 3 cylinder) for 500 bucks CDN. This included pistons/pins/rings, bearings, 3 exhaust valves, gasket kits and all the machine work. Not too bad, not too great. I find the gasket kits to be way overpriced for what you get. but hey, after 300,000 km, its not so bad.

did you rebuild it yourself? or have it done by someone else? see, i would love to do it myself over the summer, but i don't have the equipment

That place is less than a 1/2 mile from where I live. I took a look at that block, and he's had it for about 6 years. It was only in a car for 100 miles. It had a leaky casting plug. He's fixed that, cleaned the block up, and re-honed it. Looks beautiful. It's got a $400 reserve tho. If anyone wants it, I can go pick it up for them so you don't have to deal with Ebay

I got a local shop to do the machine work, and press the piston pins. I did the rest myself, quick crocus cloth polish on the crank, and go to town. Biggest thing, is measure everything carefully, and be clean. Also, Friction Master engine assembly lube, wonderful stuff, available at most machine shops.
