Map light question

I have any had my 86 GT for a short time when the battery went died, after I replaced it the two map lights no longer work. When you turn them on from up top the any lights that come on are the bottom floor lights.
I was thinking that the new battery was more power than what it was used to and I blow a bulb up top and it stops the cont. circuit there. There is no blown fuse, any ideas?
