fixing up and insurance rates.

hey i was just wondering if u put more mods in your car, dus the insurance rise also? and if thats true then do you have to tell them taht you put those modifictations in ur car? i was wondering because i have plans once i get a 3000gt but dont want the insurance to rise like mad!!??

If you don't tell your insurance carrier about the mods they won't know about them. They'll insure your car but you'll just get the OEM parts if your car has insurance work done on it.

If you tell them that you want the new parts insured then you'll be paying for them.

I was browsing this site, and I saw this post, and since I work for an auto insurance company, I decided to register and post :)


1) You can let them know of what aftermarket stuff you have on your vehicle, and considering how much it cost, can increase your insurance (which honestl is VERY inexpensive) but if anything happens to the vehicle you can get them replaced. ie: You buy some rims and they cost $2000. You let the insurance company know, and you are now covered for your rims, and your insurance goes up $20-$40 per 6 months ($3-7/month -- worth it IMO)

2) If you have excessive mods you will NOT be insured with that vehicle. ie: NOS = big big no no. If any insurance company knows you have that better look for another insurance carrier. If you have a ton of mods that is also a big no no.

3) You can always play the "I didn't know I needed to let you know about the stuff on my car" game or just neglect to let them know, but if a claim happens on your car, and they see the stuff you have on your car, they can flat out deny your claim, and report you for insurance fraud and go to jail.

Being in the insurance industry, I read alot of claims where people lie to us, and we bust them, or they don't let us know certain things of their vehicle (ie aftermarket parts, customer work etc) and we can deny the claim. If you are not 100% honest with your insurance company, you are misrepresenting yourself, and that means the insurance company can flat out deny your claim due to that.

Myself, I don't plan on doing too much to my car. Just a boost controller, some rims, and an aftermarket exhaust. All that is acceptable for modifications, and definitely worth paying a few dollars more per month just in case something happens to them.

recording a VHS tape is not illegal. Read the beginning of a tape again. Recording a VHS and showing it in public w/o permission is illegal. (ie: you own a bar and play a movie over a big screen for the patrons)


it's not exactly "illegal" not to tell your insurance company, but it is definitely misrepresentation and if/when they find out don't expect them to be very happy...

Ok a little off topic, but it has to do with mods so I'll ask here...
I'm from Canada, so we don't have to pass smog/emissions tests. But don't you guys down in the US have to? If so, how do you pass them if you have a lot of performance stuff on your car? If not... just ignore me =)

I live in Iowa, we don't have emissions tests.

I live in Kansas and we dont have emissions tests.

Well, first off, you replace your testpipe(if you're using one) with a hiflow cat, then you spray in this emissions stuff you can get at pepboys(it actually has a picture of a 3000gt on it, haha) then if you have gutted or removed your precats, you drive the car around and get it warmed up right before the emissions test. And lastly, I asked the same question in another thread, and was told that if you have upgraded turbos and fuel system, you can just use the fuel controller to lean out the mixture 4 emissions.

No emmisions testing here in Michigan. :smile:
