Ok, I have an 88 Jetta Gl with manual crank windows. The Front passenger side window is messed up. for example: when it is up, and I try to crank it down, the crank spins but the window will stay up until you hit a bump or push it down yourself. then it will slam all the way down... If the window is down, and I try to crank it up, I can feel a little bit of pressure of it starting to go up, but then something in the door makes a "click" and the crank is no longer engaged so it just spins up without moving the window... this is very annoying, and now that warm weather is coming, I need to get it working. Has anyone had a problem like this? is it something that can be fixed without parts, or will I need to replace something, if so how? It is difficult to see the cable mechanism because it is facing outward. any helo would be appreciated.

the window is just off track... open the door panel and put it back on the clip that holds it. shouldn't be broken. or the plastic clip could be broken. but i think they used metal clips til 2000 then they started using plastic ones which kept braking and i believe were recalled???

It could also be a bad window regulator (more common on the A2), no too much fun to replace.

Yeah, I found out what the problem was. The little clip that is part of the cable was not engaging the window itself. that was what the clicking was. the clip slipping past the base of the window. I took it apart, and got it working in 15 minutes. Thanks.
