gas mileage

Hey, I'm from OH but am in PA for school. The hills are really killing the mpg on my '02 Accord DX. I am wondering if anyone knows which mods are best at increasing mpg. Traffic is awful here so a little bit extra kick on the low and mid ranges would be great too. Oh yeah, college costs lots of money too, so I am on a limited budget. I thought about building that intake thats on that DelSol website and maybe a hi-flow cat and muffler. Any ideas or advice? Thanks a bunch.

Basic mods are I/H/E, (intake, headers, exhaust) they all allow you're engine to breathe better. When you add these mods, you are taking away some of the restrictions you're engine has on it. These will free up some horsepower, wont really effect your gas mileage too much. But consider the bright side, your honda beats the hell out of plenty of other cars on gas mileage.
As far as the intake, you can find one specifically for your car on ebay for 30-40 bucks.
Search the internet for headers and different exhaust solutions. There is another post titled "headers" lower on the accord page. It goes over headers and exhaust. Bottom line, muffler and hi-flow cat wont help at all if you don't get a catback system(larger piping that connects your muffler to your cat). Just be aware that any exhaust upgrades will make your car significantly louder. If you are looking to save money, you can really search the internet for good deals on the hiflow cat and mufflers. The catback can be built at meineke if you bring the muffler and hiflow cat, and will be pretty cheap.

Cheap things to also do that can get you a little more mileage. Rotate your tires, make sure the pressure of all your tires are the same and at the recommended pressure. Change your Air filter. Little things like this can help.

Service your engine regularly would also help.

Thanks for the help. I keep up with the maintenance well now. I will definitely check the tires occasionally though. I found out that the higher octane without ethanol gave me about 3 more miles/gallon and it ran much smoother. I will check out the other post on headers.

Might wanna try synthetic oil for your engine to reduce friction and high quality sparkplugs to burn the fuel effeiciently. I put it on mine and did a roadtrip from California to Navada and I was also stuck in 4 hours traffic and I made it there with one tank; about 370mi.

If you switch to synthetic, don't switch back to regular, because synthetic expands your seals which is good, but reverting to regular will make them shrink and could cause potential leaks. I only mention, because you said money was a concern and synthetic is 4 bucks more per quart.

Higher Octane gas is only good for Highway driving. if your driving in the city like me, with alot of stop and go. then It may not make sense for you to switch. Plus those hills you were talking bout will eat it up too.

Cool, thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. This forum is awsome cuz there are some many people that have been there, done that and can save us newbies a lot of trouble. I am in school for the A&P certificate(Airframe&Powerplant). I think its funny we can burn leaded and exhaust through a strait tube, not cat. Anyway, like I said, I appreciate all the input.
