Electronic Whine

I've noticed a an elctronic whine in my 1998 Grand Prix coupe that seems to be electrically related but I'm not sure. It's different from the normal whine associated with my GP and I first noticed it when I got my oil changed a week ago-dont' know if that has something to do with it or not. It increases and decreases with rpms, and isn't noticable around 1000. The car sits outside when I'm at school, and the last few weeks of cold and snow may have contributed. It seems to lessen after 15-20 minutes of driving but I can't be sure. I've also noticed that when I use my rear defroster, the whine increases noticeably. Checked the battery and it showed green in the bubble so at least it is indicating a charge. I've had the car for about 8 months haven't changed the battery at all. Since I've had it, no electrical work has been needed, and things seem to be in good condition, though this is my first winter with it and I don't know exactly what to expect. The car doesn't start hard at all, and runs well otherwise. I'm going on an extended trip soon and wanted to be sure that everything's ok. Would putting in a new battery solve the problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i'm not too sure what EXACTLY it is but it might have something to do with the alternator? i'm sure someone else will tell you more about it

I had the same whine with a cold engine on my 99. Replaced the altenator and it went away. Can't say I ever noticed it being louder with the defroster on, but it did lessen as the car warmed up.

Ok, I'll have to check into the alternator possibility, I'd considered that but wasn't familiar enough with the car to know for sure, but I'll try to find out, thanks for the help.

Another question that might indicate an alternator problem--About two weeks ago, the batter light flashed on when I started up the car in the driveway. I let it idle for a bit and it stayed on so I turned the car off, and restarted and the battery light went out. Later on that day the same thing happened but this time I drove the car and after about a minute the light went out. Could this better a better indication of a bad alternator? Thanks again for the help.

I Have The Same Problem I Have Changed The Alternator And It Still Comes Back. Ive Noticed That If I Clikck The Rear Defrost On Then Off This Whin Will Go Away...but It Always Comes Back Eith In A Couple Of Seconds Or Minutes. Ive Also Noticed That When The Conditions Are Wet This Will Never Happen Only Ewhen It Is Bone Dry Out. Im Starting To Check The Grounds On The Stereo And Alternator
