I have a 98 jetta gl 2.0 5 speed no mods just plain. ok here's the prob I was in a drive thru line and I put the car in neutral and when i went to depress the clutch it went to the floor. so i thought the cable had snapped (it is a cable clutch). but the cable is fine so i thought maybe it was the release bearing. ( but that is buried inside the transaxel) So i have the car apart i replaced the clutch thinking that might help. It didn't so now is it the release bearing that needs to be replaced or could it be that rod that runs thru the tranny. if anyone could help that would be great.. any questions just ask :banghead:

It's most likely the little lever at the release bearing in the end of the tranny, just remove the end cap & you should see it ( cap pops out, & is supposed to be replaced with a new one). Most VW dealers stock them because it's common.
