Boy oh boy, do I hate drawing rims? They always make a decent drawing look horrible. Im drawing a '51 Bel Air and I need to draw the rims, but I know its going to mess everything up. Any tips? Suggestions? Guidelines?

Use a pencil first to get the right shape. That's how i make sure they look right eventhough my rims always turn out wonky. lol

a. draw very lightly
b. once you get a decent shape down, make minor adjustments to that same shape, instead of completely erasing if its not perfect
c. pay close attention to the perspective
d. use a...stencil...if all else fails

I use the grid technique. I draw lightly. Keep trying to reshape. After 4 hours of shaping they still look retarded. Wheres Asaenz?

Yeah man, you know we are always willing to help a noob in need.
LOL, Just Kidding with ya, but yeah, post a pic and then a pic of the rims you want and we'll help you the best we can. Where is Alfred anyway? I hope he is fixing and or finishing the cobra...

wow...what a beautiful car...but for the rims..draw the outline (where the metal touches the tire) then draw in the gaps between the spokes and color them in black..this should help with the rims

I do that process. My rims always end up oblonged or just plain ol' messed up.

Ok. That would be cool
I feel like an idiot asking for help. I dont want to sound cocky but I do see myself as a fairly good artist. Just rims, Why cant they be square?

Hi Mike,
Have you seen this link?
http://www.drawthrough.com/tutorials/index.html
Do draw the minor and major axis. After drawing that then procede to draw your rim then your tires if you show the detail (tires). Look and observe the inside also called negative space of your ellipse and the 4 pies that will result from the cross (axis lines).
Concentrate on making those the same (pie space, aka negative space), getting them correct. After you get the outer rim ellipse straight proceed to draw the others look at the space between your ellipse lines (negative space). Work your way into the rim and also draw the ellipse that represents the tire.
The angle is hard you will have to draw the entire rim even thought it is cut off by the body.
Once you have the entire rim then erase the part that is tucked away. Be sure to draw lightly on the part you will have to erase. I know those rims are hard they are hard for me.
I really think the grid can help. I always use the grid for my rims and then come in for a hard lines w/ templates.
I am sure you know this in my cars I use ellipse templates too. I didn't want anyone to think that my ellipses come out that straight w/o such help. :)
Those are hard don't give up.
Sorry for the miss-spells. It is reall early in the morning and I am tired.

Just one minor proble. I have already shaded the body. :banghead: Now I cant draw the rim ontop of the body.

Sorry if I sound like a stubborn little bitch.
Tracing is for the devil. :evillol:
Also, my paper is pretty thick. I cant see anything through it, even with a light table.

I didn't mean off the pic, I meant DRAW it on another paper, then trace it on the car.
Instead off drawing a line onto the body, make 3 lines and a small dot on the car. Connect the lines in an elipse but draw most of the way to the dot, and do not draw on the car. For the rear, just make three lines and connect.
