Whenever I install the first thing I would buy is a $10 wiring harness specific for my vehicle. Then as you mentioned the "trim kit" which is another $10-$20. Lastly and probably the most overlooked part is the connections. I first solder, then using a good quality "heat shrink" Butt connector, any good electronics,or audio store will have them. I like to solder just because I have seen these connectors come off if not crimped correctly, the solder gives it a good grip when crimping.

i like to just twist em, no tape or anything like that, just bare twisted wires.

wire harness, install kit, and you'll also need an adapter for the gm radio cable, they dont fit into the standard size radio receiver ports...

Ok, heres the correct way if you havent already torn everything apart.
you need three things for your car, a wire harness which is standard for gm cars 89-02. A camaro dash kit, its made just for 93-97 camaro/firebirds. and an gm antenna adapter to fit into the new radio. If your car has the monsoon sound system you need to hook up the remote turn on wire on the radio which is blue/white. do not solder, and do not cut the factory plug hence you defeat the purpose and ease of the wire harness. Factory gm colors are very hard to match up to aftermarket universal colors so get a harness and use crimp caps. Other wise Circuit City sells quick adapters which snap together making everything very easy.
