What type of engines would replace an 98 LS1? I know GM makes a few crate engines but i heard most have carbs and aren't programmed to function with the electronic systems. If there are any, please submit a website or a source in which they are found.

first, why in the hell would you replace a LS1?! just build it up. but if you're gonna replace it--- if you have the money go with a LT4/LS6 and then as for crate motors there aren't that many that aren't carb fed liek you mentioned but personally i'd go with a 383 or bigger, possibly go with a 502... but i don't know what you want to do with the car so.....

I hope that your engine is royaley Fuc*** if your going to replace the LS1. great engine. anyways, like you and the guy above said, most crate engines are carbed, personally i like carb's. Anyways, just build the LS1, like said above, again, the LS6 is probabley the next best option.

Because, if i an LS1 cost about 7k new w/ 305 horses, then why not just spend 5k on a new crate engine with 400 or more horses? I have nothing against an LS1, but i have always wanted to customize my car and i think the 1st place to start is the heart of the car. Plus, would you rather have a stock LS1 w\ headers, turbo (or super), exhaust, etc. or would you rather have a brand new engine w/ raw horsepower?

What is wrong with the engine you have?

same question as above- ? you made it sound like you HAVE a LS1 and want to replace it. if you're going to be doing a project or essentially building something from scratch then i would recommend going with a crate motor over a LS1- it'll just give you a more wide range of available power and mods and you can put in whatever you want kinda, with a specific engine like a LS1 you kind of limit yourself in a way to the possible mods.

mostly all of GM's crate motors are carbd not fuel injected, but if you are going to replaxe your ls1 for anything get the LS6

Where can i find an LS6 motor and what are the specs on that? Is it just an upgrade engine or does come stock in some other car? Also, do you know what the output on it is?

ls6 is the stock corvette z06 motor...its pretty nice puts out 405 horse. however i dont think it is worth it to take out ls1 unless theres somethin severley wrong with it. you can get a ls6 motor for like 7 grand

Thanx, do you know where i could find one? It sounds like they aren't that much more expensive than a new LS1 and they have more output.

no i have nothing saved just remeber a friend who had the same idea as you. only he has a firebird not a ta so it would be a very beneficial upgrade to ls6 for him, but he did show me a website that had one for about 7500

Can't you convert an ls1 to ls6 with a head/cam change???

i think there is more to it then that...but hey maybe ur right im not sure. i know with a head and cam package from SLP you'll be pushin 485 horse which is significantly more than ls6. which is why upgrading ls1 makes more sense then buyin new engine

its more then a cam and stuff...the only thing they really have in common is that its a smallblock. its better to buy a new ls1 and spend the saved money on mods for it. the ls1 is only 60hp less then the ls6. with the saved 2,000$ or so 60hp will not b too hard to come by

For all the reasons posted here as to why this fellow would want to replace/substitute an LS1, maybe he simply wants a big block V8. Yes the LS1/6 Gen III is an amazing motor - but it ain't a big block.

Here's a link to a fuel injected 502 Ramjet with aluminum heads. It says the engine is meant for 1978 and older vehicles, and its questionable whether or not it would even fit under the hood, but nevertheless here it is. Its not cheap either - but if I had this mother under the hood I wouldn't spend a dime upgradeing it (MAYBE I'd port the heads after a while but thats it!).

But I agree it woudl be silly to replace a working LS1 with a crate motor.
