Irritating problem?????

Help! I have a 1990 camry and when it is in neutral and I press the gas it initialy starts to roar slowly as if the gas doesn't reach the engine or there is air somewhere (like there isn't continuous flow of gas into the engine) but then it picks up and roars normal. The engine sound is smooth, no cranks or other noises. when I am driving it, and say I want to accelarate fast it doesn't react immediately. there is like a 1 to 1.5 second delay and then it rips the street apart as expected as its initial reaction. It is prefectly drivable but this problem is irritating me. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanx

Has it been tuned-up recently?

I just bought the car so I have no idea. You think it needs a tuneup?
Thanks for your reply

UPDATE#1:
Thanks boys. I just dropped off the car for a tune up. Hope it works. I will let you all know tonight. By the way, what is the ETC button that is next to the parking brake handle for.

If it is the ECT button it's for the electronically controlled transmission. In short it changes the shift points in the trans.
power-stays in a lower gear longer
economy-shifts sooner

Don't forget a new fuel filter. Best of luck! :2cents:
