My mate has a 91 B16 CRX vtec..., it was off the road for while needing MOT'd due to lack of funds but i got it sorted out and back on the road yesterday! my mate was delighted UNTIL....
i get a call at 7.30am today for him to tell me his cars broken down! so i get dressed and head out. i get to the car and its just spinning over! hhmmm tryin to work out whats wrong when still half asleep not good.
we push the car to the side of the road and i take him home as i didnt have time to look at it cos i was working at 8.30am which i ended up late i may add. anyways he got the car back to his house and checked out, the timing belt/cambelt has snapped! oh sh1t.
so thats my nice job for 2m nite after work, im gonna fit a new belt and pray it starts failing that i'll be taking the head off it for some examination

Sucko.
Someone told me that when the timing belts on our cars break that the pistons will come up and bend the valves so they have to be replaced... Anyone know if that's true? It's never happened to me yet (knock on wood), but if it does, I hope the head isn't thrashed.

my understanding of it is that is depends how it breaks, what position the pistons are in......I think you could luck out and have no damage, or it could be the other way........

Honda engines are interference engines, so when the timing belt breaks, the valves can come into contact with the pistons. There is a small chance the valves/pistons are fine, but I wouldn't bet on it.

on a DOHC motor it more likely that the pistons did not hit valves because when the tension on the T-belt is released the cams "float" to a closed point because of less resistance from the springs. It DOES happen that the motor is spinning to quickly for this to happen though. but best of luck to your mate.

i adjusted the tappets and also done a compression test! all A-OK! :evillol:
