Double the weight?? Why?

The original mini weighed only about 1400lbs, the new one weighs roughly twice that despite the fact that it is not that much bigger. I know that there are more saftey equipment and such nowadays but still that seemes far too heavy, which is probably why they are not as fast as people think they are.
