I have a 97 6-speed Trans Am and I'm having a heck of a time getting it into reverse. I can push the shifter to the right and then up but it won't pop into reverse. I have to slam it repeatedly from neutral to reverse untill it finally pops in. This is very agrivating especially when I'm u-turning on my street or backing out of a parking space because it can take a very long time to get it into reverse. Also it's starting to get hard to shift into first from a dead stop but not every time like 1 out of 4 times it's hard. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or knew what was causing it and how expensive it might be to fix. ALso when the clutch pedal is pushed all the way to the floor and I put it in gear it will still slightly engage the gear just enough to inch me forward slowly is this normal for the car or something I need to have looked at?

Maybe you bent the shift fork when shifting hard one time? I lost 4th gear on my SS once because I bent the shift fork, maybe the same can be applied here...

Um my friend has the same problem with his Eclipse. Because one night I had to drive him home and they were drunk and yeah I was having that problem where the gear was nowhere to be found and stopped at a stoplight while it was green with a cop in the next parking lot with beer in the car but anyways nothing happened but back to your question the next day he told me that he has to push the clutch all the way down and then while trying to put it in gear, ease off of the clutch a little. I don't know what's wrong or anything but maybe you can try that and it will help you until you get it fixed.

I tried easing off the clutch but reverse is still a real pain to get into, for some reason it's easier to shift into reverse when the engins is off. I'm gonna take it to a transmission shop that I've been to before (with another car) and have them check it out.

Well I had the tranny torn down by a local shop along with the clutch. The clutch was bad and not fully disengaging and it damaged the syncros and a few other parts, did say the gears are all ok though so he's gonna rebuild it. He's still looking around for a clutch 'cause the dealer wants $611.00 for the clutch which is just retarded.
