Could you be a hitman?

There are so many of these "could you..." threads, and i have been thinking about this for a while. On tv assasins and hitmen seem to live glorified lives with luxery, wealth, women, and safety. I know if there are hitmen out there, which there have to be at least a handful, they can't live such a comfortable life. Given the chance with the knowledge, tools, and superiors (such as a powerful drug cartel or something of the like) would you be a hitman? This is taking in to account the power you have and the money you can make. I guess you could also consider it being something like a mercinary. Would you be able to disconnect yourself enough to take a life, or more than one? I am almost afraid that i think i could, or would like the power that came with the job. Now i have never done anything CLOSE to killing anyone, but i hurt someone's feelings once (name that quote), but i think i can disconnect myself from emotions well enough i could. Now if i ever got close to the moment of truth, i doubt i could go through, but what do you think and know about yourself?

p.s. Please don't flame me, this in no way is supposed to mean i wanna kill people. This just has been on my mind, especially after watching a movie about a hitman.

Yes, I feel I could, only if it were for a cause. Like taking out a drug ring leader, crime boss, etc. But not to take out someone just to benefit someone else. Why, I am not sure. I once went hunting with my father, and I must say, I hated it. I hated knowing that I just took a living things life like that. But with the training that I recieved in the Marine Corp, I feel I could take aim, and put a round through the eye. I guess it is because of the 'brainwashing' that I recieved. But I could do that without a second thought.

I would probably not have sufficient confidence in my ability to predict the possible negative outcomes (and minimise their risks) to consider killing anyone and getting away with it as a viable option.

If I could kill someone knowing that nobody would ever suspect me,and I had no connections with either victim or paymaster, and I was truly desparate for the money offered,I might. But how would I feel afterwards?

But who is to say if its ok or not to kill someone? Someone will benefit directly from the death of a drug lord, namely another drug lord. I think i could, but i don't think i could hunt, lol. For me i am intrigued by the power, logic and smarts (not just walking up to someone and shooting them), and all that. I need to stop watching movies....

PS...Towlie...im taking your wang wang statement and using it in my everyday conversations. from now on...everything is "off the wang wang"...:D

I believe I could do it . . .

I've fantasized about it . . . I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that I could kill someone and be sure to get away with it. In fact, I find myself thoroughly upset when people get caught for murder . . . i just don't get it.

The only thing that might pose a problem for me is the resolution within . . . like how do you convince your conscience that it mustn't torment you with nightmares and paranoia?

I'd say more . . . but I don't want to scare anybody . . .:D

I could kill someone if my life or the lives of my family was threatened (or I was able to stop an act of violence that was nearby) but I wouldn't do it for money.

I am sorta like i_rebel, i almost fantasize about planning it out and getting away with it. I almost think my conciounce wouldn't be a problem as much as thinking of ways to get away with it.

It'd be interesting. Great hobby to keep your mind in shape as your grow old I'm sure. Bit of philanthropic activity if done right.

Absolutely not.

Don't know if I have too much respect for human life or if I'm just a wuss. Call it what you like, but I couldn't do it.

if it's a real mafia boss they'll pay you for sure
they have morals that way, it would make them look bad if they didn't pay

if you do a favor for them, then they'll pay you...

Interesting question, because it is not just a MORAL issue that you are asking about, and even on just a moral level, there are a number of questions. Personally, no, I probably couldn't do this.

But I know some one who has, in a way. I have a friend who was in the US Army Special Forces in the late '80s, before the Gulf War. We've had a few conversations about what he did, most of which involve statements like "I was in Lebanon once, and .......it was...um....hot." Now some of this would sound like bragging and macho BS, but you'd have to know the man, and I've had partial confirmation from some one else I have reason to believe.

The US doesn't send SF units into other countries to sight see. Most missions are recon, hostage rescue or to eliminate "problems". Regardless of presidential edicts and such, I don't think any one here is naive enough to think that most countries' military forces and "black ops" type units don't kill when necessary. The person I know was invovled in at least one mission that involved removal of a "problem", said problem being a human being. So the unit in question were being employed as hit men. Does it make it different when a country does the killing? I really don't think so. Even if the person I know never did anything, The US Army, British SAS, Israeli Mossad and other such forces HAVE and WILL use force to eliminate persons consider to be enemies of their respective states. Does that make these units "hit men"? Depends on how you look at things.

i think it's totally different.... because if you're a hitman, you don't really know anything about the people, and you're killing them purely for the money.

in the army you kill for a reason, solving a problem :)

that's the way i look at it... but i see how you would say they're similar

Answering the question: assuming the chance of getting caught/killed wasn't so high, yeah.
I might mention that I am a soldier, and while I justify that morally, I would in no way justify any assasinations. That's the difference. Soldier I am for my country, for a common good, while if I could be a hitman, I would be so solely for myself.

I could be a hitman. As long as no family member of mine is a contract, you can rest assure I will carry it out. I really don't need a reason other than the money.

Hell yeah I could do it. I have noticed though that in real life hit-men instances they do it for a lot less money. If was to make a career out of it I would have to be paid well. I wanna only do like 1 or 2 hits a year. I'd have it all planned out; off shore accounts, swecret identity, one point of contact for assignments, etc.

$150,000 and your ass is grass

Forget that moral crap. Just tell me who, where they live, and for how much. I don't have time to read up on person to determine if they need to be off'd. Then I'd have a guilty conscience.

Think about it. If you take out a crime boss or a drug leader...you have just signed your own death warrant. It's safer to only have to off a soccer mom, in Boise, Idaho, for a cool $100,000 electronically deposited to a Swiss bank account.

How would they ever find out? Only if you were a moron and either got in their face to do the job, or you went around and bragged about the job... either way, yes you signed your own death warrant.:smoka:

After seeing The Professional I'd think I would be a hitman only if I were as good as Leon. As it is I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun :p

I belive without a doubt that I could do it, I don't ask for a rightous cause all it would take would be the right amount of money.

The one problem that I would have would be aquiring a suitable sniper rifle with decent telescopic sights. I feel that the longer range of a sniper rifle gives for a better chance of escape.

I see...but there is just too much risk taking out a person who has people on their payroll who take people out for a living. And there is always the threat of a guy ratting you out after days of nonstop torture at the hands of a mob boss or drug dealer. No such risk with a soccer mom. :D

Its all about the risk to profit ratio.

I'm pretty sure that I could do it, I have been known to talk myself into doing some things(In my younger years) that went agianst all the moral values my parents instilled in me. As far as what would happen when the time to squeeze the trigger the rest of the way came... who knows no one can say for sure untill they are in that situation. Just convince me that they are the enemy and I'm there with a 408 and a scope:D
