What tranny to use?

hey, i'm stuck here.

i'm not sure what tranny to use with my 289 (67coupe)... i was going to go with a top-loader, but i wanted to get around 400km per tank on the highway, so if that is ideal then i need an OD...

i was just looking at T-5 info (very easy switch for my car) BUT!!! (it never fails) the tranny is only good till 275tq on 80s t-5s and 300 on 90-93.. even with 300tq it will still get ripped up (my engine will be around 350tq, and that with still a LOT of mods yet to be done, so it won't last)

anyone know of any other good trannys that were in junkyard cars?(imean cars that are now fairly common in the junk yard.

thanks

A T-5 out of a late 80's early 90's Mustang will work fine behind a 289 even with 300 ft/lbs of torque.

but see, my 289 will have around 320-350tq...
and thats still with a lot of stock stuff, and a lot of "budget proformance"..
my concern is that i willl spend about 500-600 bucks on stuff and then it gets busted because it can't handle it.. ya know?

What do you have done to ya 289 and plan to do?

to put it extreamly vaguely:

pistons, cam, intake, carbs, exhaust.. plus stuff like elec. fan.

with a good set of heads on that they are proven to push over 410hp (at the fly wheel). after that my crank and rods arn't really any good.

only thing is with a 289 they like to rev. so all my hp is up at like 6000rpm, and torque at something like 4000-4500

either way this is about the tranny.. but one more thing i think that those torque ratings are playin it safe.. i've seen some T-5s pushed pretty hard..

The T5's rated to take 300 ft-lbs are rated to take 300 ft-lbs in a 5000 pound vehicle. The stress placed on the trans will be much less in a 3000-3500 pound car, and the trans will take a lot more torque. Go with a T5.

Boosted331 helped me out with a similar question that I posted in the thread called "Tremec 3650".
