2002 Ford Explorer front crank seal leaking

I recently purchased a used 02 Explorer XLT 4.0 liter with 31000 miles from a local Ford dealer and discovered 2 problems within 2 weeks of ownership. First, I have the high pitched whistling sound which seems to be worse when very cold outside. Secondly, I noticed engine oil on front drive shafts and discovered that the oil was coming from the front crank seal. The 4.0 liter is supposedly a solid engine. Why would a vehicle with only 31000 miles have the front crank seal leaking oil already? Thankfully it is still under warranty and the dealer is supposed to fix it this week.
I would appreciate any sugguestions on how to fix the whistling noise (I will check my muffler for blocked drain wholes as suggested in another thread). Also, what kind of extended warranty should I buy to protect myself from further engine leaks, engine bearing failure, or any drivetrain problems that have not yet, but may occur in the future??
Thanks

i'd say the pcv system is plugged and the blowby pressure is leaking through the oil seal i saw this happen on a trans-am once. i'd be checking the rear seal too ford won't mention if it's leaking because dealerships aren't allowed to sell waranty work.

I think I would clean the area where you think its leaking with a apray engine cleaner and flush with water, wipe clean. Run the engine and watch for oil to emerge (or run down).

Ford has a TSB out for the 4.0 making a loud screeching sound when its cold out...Its the fan clutch. Have them look it up, it was done to my 02 explorer
