I have a problem with my 1993 Elantra (1.6). Please excuse me with my description because I do not know a lot about cars. The problem is that the engine is revving at a higher rpm ever 3 or 4 seconds when the car is idling. This only happens after the car is warmed up, it doesn’t do it the first 5 or so minuets that I drive the car. Also when I turn on the air conditioning it stops doing it, and it doesn’t seem to do it when the car is being driven, only when it is sitting at a stop sign or red light. It will oscillate from the normal engine idle speed for 3-4 second and then for a second I will rev at a higher speed.

I had it to a mechanic and he thought that I was the mass air flow sensor so I ordered one of them and put it in but it didn’t fix the problem. I would take it to a import specialist but i live in a small town and there isint one, this was the guy that everyone told me to go to.

If anyone has any idea what may be wrong with my car I would be extremely appreciative… its been driving me crazy for over a year now.

my e mail is [email protected] or you can IM me at LooksThatKilled but i am not on line that often.

thanks.

Have the IAC checked. I see that problem a lot with that year Elantra. Only problem, on that car, usually the the IAC goes bad and frieds the computer, or the other way around. If it is bad, you'd want to replace both.

thanks for getting back to me, i really apreciate it.

but...

what does IAC, and what computer are you talking about. im pretty sure this mechanic dosent know alot about newer, electronic and import cars so i would like to give him as much information as posible to get the problem fixed.

I had the same problem with my '93 Elantra. It turnded out to be the Idle Control Servo. I got a used one at a junk yard for $40.00 and fixed it in about 10 minutes

could even be the TPS...throttle position sensor.

The TPS you can check pretty easily with a volt meter. So you should go that route first.
