Noise Underneath After Ignition Turned Off

Just went to lunch in my 1999 Sliverado 2500 and noticed the ABS light was lit. When I got to the diner and turned the ignition off, I heard an ongoing noise - raspy, like something was turning or trying to turn - underneath the vehicle. Source is located somewhere in the midsection underneath. Puzzled, I went to eat. When I came back out of the diner 40 minutes later, same noise was still coming. Hmmm. Maybe something didn't reset. Crank the truck up and then cut it off. Same noise. Hmmm. Pulled the brake fuse and the 4WD fuse. Still nothing. Drove back to work, cut the truck off, and still have the noise. Any ideas, anyone?

Sounds like the ABS pump is running or the ABS relay box is fryed...

I agree, it sounds like the abs module crapped out on you. My truck did the same thing. You will have to pull the large ABS fuse in the underhood fuse panel. Your brakes will still work fine without the fuse, you just won't have any ABS until you replace or fix the abs module. The pump itself should still be fine, what happens is that some kind of internal solonoid or switch frys inside the abs module and causes the pump to run continously. You should be able to get the module fixed or replaced with a used one for less than $150, don't go and buy a brand new one for $1000.

My 99 1500 had this problem at 41K miles. It had a 267 Code, "Pump Motor Circuit Open/Shorted. The brake control module and valve were replaced, fortunately under the extended warranty.

Where can you get the module fixed or replaced?

I got a used one off of ebay. You should be able to find plenty of them there. I have even seen auctions for people that will fix the module portion of the abs pump for you if you send it to them. I just bought a whole used assembly - pump & module together. I replaced it myself in about 1 hour. If I had to do it again, it would probably take less than a half hour. Hope this helps.

No real secrets that I can think of. They only problem I really had was that the pump/module is in a fairly tight space on the main frame rail below the drivers seat area and that I had to wiggle it out, it would only come out one way once I figured it out. It is a messy job as well because you have to disconnect all of the brake lines from the pump, make sure that you don't get brake fluid all over the truck as it can eat through paint. I really isn't that difficult of a job depending on how handy you are, remember to disconnect the battery first. Have lots of brake fluid on hand as you will likely lose quite a bit during the whole process and you will have to bleed the brakes after the job is complete.

Thanks again! I was hoping you would say that I could get it out without pulling the pump too.

I don't know if you can or can't get the module itself on and off without removing the pump. Like I said I bought a complete used assembly so I didn't want to mess around with taking it apart. I have seen other forums on this exact topic if you search around the Silverado and the Sierra sections you might find a better answer.

I took only the ABS module off without disturbing anything else. Get a little mirror so you can see the 4 little allen screws holding it on. There is a guy I sent it to and he repairs them for $115.00. He has some auctions on ebay or you can email him. His name is Gavin Curtis. [email protected]. You can also call (208) 877-2119. He fixes them better than the new factory ones.
