Hard to get ECU codes - 92 Sentra 1.6L

The ECU in the 92 Sentra is mounted below the center console with the mode switches inaccessible because they are against the firewall. How do I get the codes without an expensive code reader. Does the ECU need to be removed for acces?

I have a 92 nissan sentra 1.6, and I was able to access the ECM today with only a screwdriver. The Chilton's manual is actually not too bad for this. You remove the passenger side lower console panel (1 screw and one psuedo screw). The ECM is then exposed. You don't need to take it out. Just reach around to the back of the ECM and turn the screw (it's on the back right) clockwise, then wait 2 seconds, then counterclockwise. The car ignition must be on, but the car should not be running. The red light on the right side of the ECM will flash long for the first number, then short for the second number. For instance, long, long, short, short, short would be 32.
The codes are
11 Camshaft position sensor
12 mass air flow sensor
13 engine coolant temperature sensor
14 vehicle speed sensor
21 ignition signal
31 engine controle module
32 EGR function
33 Oxygen sensor
35 EGR temperature sensor
43 throttle position sensor
45 injector leak
55 no malfunction detected

It seems easier than what I thought.
Is the screw on the rigth side of the box or on back side (front of car)? The last one would be difficult to see or access.

The screw is on the back side of the box (front of car). The light is on the right side (passenger side) of the box. The screw is a little tricky to see, but it is near the back right corner which makes it fairly easy to access from the passenger side. There may be a thin sheet of plastic over the screw which you would need to puncture.
