another engine noise - distributer?

i read another post on this page about an engine noise (not the same as mine)... and someone suggested the Distributer/cap

I have a 92 accord DX - 5 speed with around 60k miles

My noise sounds like its coming straight from the distributer..

is this an known problem with these cars?
Is it a bearing of some kind? the rotor working itself loose?

What are some of the other known problems associated with this make/model/year?

You could get lucky and its a bad rotor. Try replacing that first. If not, 92-93 Accords are prone to distributir bearings going bad. VERY expensive.

im very unfamiliar with honda engines in general... so i have a few questions

first, how expensive is VERY? $200? $600?

where are the bearings installed? on the distrubter shaft itself? Whats involved in the repair? is it as simple as a distrubuter removal/replacement?

I have a 92 LX. I replaced the distributor 5 years ago. It's the noise directly from it and very soon the engine misfired due to metal debris from the bearing. I replaced the while distributor. Not sure if you can just do the bearing only.

i see the bearing for sale for $23.00... im going to look into just replacing that..

$530!!?? In US dollars? Wow, where did you get that price? It should around $150 from dealer.

Honda dealer parts site. Majestic Honda. $530.73 list (USD). They are not cheap for genuine Honda, especially from a dealer.

Well, its fixed.. for a total of about $150.00

Went to www.thepartsbin.com and purchased a distributer housing (06301-pt3-a20) for $132.00

Then went local and purchased a new cap and rotor for about 15.00.

Pulled it in the garage, moved the airbox out of the way, pulled off the spark plug wires. Removed the cap. Marked which way the rotor was facing. Removed the 2 electrical connectors. Removed the 3 12mm bolts. distributer pulled right out. Pulled off the rotor, a small plastic shield. Had to remove a module from the old distributer, and transfer it to the new one, then reconnect it. Put the old small shield back on, then the rotor, then put the distributer housing back on the head. It only goes on 2 ways... its either right, or 180 degrees off. So i put it on right, put on the new cap, reconnected the 2 connectors, and then the wires, airbox back in place. Started right up.

Total cost was about $150.00?

I was suprised how bad the old distributer was. It was extremely hard to turn compared to the new one. Im suprised the bearing didnt totally blow apart sooner. The amount of dust in there was crazy.
