97 jetta struts

I recently changed a four struts on my 97 jetta gl I screwed up on on and had to go back and redo. Now I am really confused. Hayns manual not very clear. Wich is the correct procedure for assemnaling front strut?

1) Coil sping, bearing, retaining plate, rubber bushing

2) Coil sping, retaining plate, ruber bushing , bearing

3) your sudjestion.

Help please
