:smokin: I've got a 72 Gp that I have been restoring for about 2 years.
It's got a 400 4bbl and 400 trans. Could someone tell me what kind of hp this engine makes? I've read in Pontiac High Performance mag. about 72 Firebirds with the 400 and that they had around 200 hp. I figure my 400 is not much different, so is it safe to say that i've got 200 hp. 200hp seems kinda low for a 400 cubic inch engine.
When i got the car it had set for about 10 years, so the only driven i've done in it is from the rollback to my back yard.
I'm not shure what the engine code is, I know the heads are 7K3http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/501/149493My_Car.JPG

Rogue, is not that the engine can not generate more bhps, as I said on the other thread. The problem is that from 70 to 74 the governemtn impossed a lot of emissions laws and even tought the car had really big engines they were twicked to have low bhps. That is why I preffer Muscle Cars from 64 to 69 before they imposed emissions regulations on the cars. But yours look really in good shape, great job you are doing to it...

 Yah, I know that they de-tuned the cars to meet goverment regulations. I'm build'n this engine to make some big hp, so really I just wanted to know the hp for a base line, you know, so I know where I started.
That pic above is it about 12 years ago, I wish it looked as good now. It sat in that car port for about 10 years, so their was some rust issues. Here's what it looked like last summer.

Back yard restoration, the hard way.

After bust'n the engine apart I found some of the ways GM cuts hp. I found all kinds of casting flaws in the heads and block, I also found that the carb had some missing parts. The Rochester 4 barral has 4 brass rods that carry fuel from the bowls to the injecters. Well this carb was miss'n one, I replaced it with one off of a OLD's 4bbl I had.

Does anyone know what kind of hp a 72 400 makes? How about where I can find a quarter panel? Thats the thing about restoring something that is not mainstream, it's imposiable to find parts.
