Just wondering if there is any info out there about people regrooving street legal slick tyres. I have a set of Bridgstone Potenzas with a curved groove steming from the wall of the tyre to middle, approximately every 12cm of rotation. I can see that it wouldnt be hard to do, however, was still sceptical about this rumour. Would be nice, considering each tyre is over $500 AUD

You can buy machines which can cut a groove into a tyre, but they are ment for use on brand new race only slicks.

Doing it to a street tyre, or worn out race tyre slick would be very dangerous.
You would effectivly be cutting through the rubber into the tyres casing, which of course weakens the tyres structure making it rather dangerous.

There are other issues with grooving race tyres for road use, depending on local laws its often illegal to run a race tyre on the road, regardless of its tread pattern, and most race tyres have it quite clearly printed on the side wall that they are not road legal.

Cheers Moppie.
The tyres im running are a Department of Transport Approved tyre so there are no worries there. I thought that might be the case with the regrooving. I might just "adjust" the wear indicators in that case :evillol:

The wear indicators are there to tell you when the tyre is nearly worn out.

Tyres are built up in layers of differnt rubber compounds, and should only ever be worn down to a certian point, or you will start to get into the rubber layed down to surport the weight of the car, maintian the shape of the tyre, and not provide grip in the road.
The wear indicators on modern tyres are there to tell you when you've reached the limit of the rubber designed for traction, and are about to encroach on the rubber not designed for traction.
