Another overheating Jeep

I just put in a 195 stat and the temp runs anywhere between 210 and 220. When idling it goes almost to red line. No leaks in system.

Out of ideas! Also, should the electric fan kick on when the temp gets this hot? I can turn on the AC and the fan will cycle on and off, but no go with heater on.

Help!

In my dealings with the mid 90's XJ, the normal operating temp for a stock XJ is between 210-220 with 220 being centerline on the jeep temp guage. It will cycle up and down a lot with the stock cooling system with any age on it. If your going any hotter than that there is a problem. I had the same issue and after my water pump went out in a big way I replaced everything to the heater switch. I also upgraded to a 3 core radiator and that made a *huge* difference.

Yes the electric fan should turn on when the collant hits a certain temp. If it is not turning on then you may have a bad/dirty/shorted temp sensor...try unplugging and replugging in your temp switch a few times. Maybe the contacts are dirty or not seated all the way. Hopefully when you changed the thermostat you cleaned the housing real good and didn't get any materials in the port for the temp sensor.
