'89 speaker wiring

I have an '89 Silverado 2500 and the back passenger speaker just started making a popping and crackling sound whenever the stereo is on. All I want to do is cut the wires to that speaker so it will not receive any power, and I'll just listen to the radio on the other 3 speakers. I was wondering if anybody could tell me where i could get a wiring schematic to see where the wires for the speaker are, or if they could tell me how to get the side panel off so i could get to the speaker itself.

The crackling has stopped, but I would still like to know how to get the side panels off so I can put in a couple of new speakers.

If you still need to know how to get the side pannel off ill tell you. It is actually quite easy if you have an 89 like mine. First thing you have to do is remove the coat hook thing and the piece where the seatbelt goes in (remember when putting your truck back together to make sure the seatbelt screw is in really tight.) After that you should be able to just pop off the top to get to the side pannel. When you get it off there wont be much room. You can only move the side pannel about 3-5 inches from the side of the vehicle. that should get you right to the speaker and then you can cut the wires or do what i did and buy new ones for it. (they should be 4x6's) If you need anymore help just let me know ill be glad to help if i can.

Is this truck a regular cab? If so, do regular cabs have 4 speakers. Or just 2 in the dash. Thanks.

Regular cab trucks have 4 speakers as well. All four are 4x6s.

Thanks a lot. I am getting an 88 next week, would you suggest replacing all the speakers?

Well, it just depends on if you want something that is going to be loud, lol. The factory speakers do OK if you don't really care about super loud with alot of bass, but if thats what you are looking for then yes, you need to go with new speakers. I tried a set of Kickers that were 4x6 and they just flat out sucked though! Maybe if you had an amp to hook to them then they would be ok, but with the factory radio, they were awful.

Before you start replacing them I'd wait and see if the factory ones worked, becuase if you're not planning on putting an in-dash cd player, then I suggest just keeping the factories.

I found a pretty decent set of Pioneers on the net. I just have a feeling in a truck that old the factory's would be close to shot and they probably werent all that great to begin with. Is it a pain in the ass to install a cd player on one of these?

Well, the Kickers I bought sucked and they costed $100 for two. The front speakers are really easy to change, the cover just pops out and there they are, but the rear ones are not as easy because you have to take down that entire panel. I have a disc changer in my truck becuase I don't like how they look in the dash becuase you have to put the cd player where the cassette deck is and then you either have the option of leaving the old raido controls are just removing them and having an empty space there. I had my changer installed at a radio store, so I dont know how hard it would be to do. I do know that an in-dash cd player would probably be easier then the changer though, and they woudl allow ya to easily hook an amp to the radio and then you could get some really good speakers.

Thats a good point. That was most of my concern for the in dash system. I didnt want to do any cutting of the dashboard, and i know the tape and radio are separate. I never thought of the cd changer. I could do that and just put in decent 4x6s all around and maybe a small sub behind the seat to help out with a little bass.

So do you control all the volume and stuff through your factory controls??

installing a cd player isnt hard if u have the same style truck as me. if u want an aftermarket sterio the best place to put it would be where the cassette player is and turn the actual radio into a compartment for cd's or put something like a tacometer there like i did.thats my suggestion if u want a cd player. only draw back is its a little far from the drivers seat.

Well, you don't actually have to cut anything I don't think. I just don't like how they look and like "ragingcadet" says its a pretty good stretch to the cd controls. It does look ok if done properly though.

And yes, my factory radio works just as it did before. I still have my cassette deck too and it still works. The cd changer is an fm changer, so it works on a designated fm frequency. It has a small control unit that mounts anywhere on the dash you like (mine is just below the a/c controls) and it also has a wireless remote for controlling the changer. Mine is a 10-disc Kenwood FM changer.

Quick ?
If i replace the factory speakers with aftermarket 4x6s, and it says the Tweeter protrusion is 1/3 " with that fit under the plastic speaker covers in the dash?
