Quick Question

I'm just building my first model now, and I'm having a kind of problem. When I glue the painted parts together, the glue I'm using seems like it dissolves the paint. (using super glue)

Is it that the paint isn't dry enough or just that I should use a different type of glue, or maybe something else?

Most glueing should be done before painting if possible; glue is a solvent and will easily dissolve paint.

Scrape the paint away from the area where the glue will be applied and touch the paint up afterwards.

Be patient waiting for responses, forums are not like chat rooms, sometimes it takes a while for somebody to reply.

TRUE TRUE.......... Yous should use modeling glue like testors or tamiya glues they work good.:D:D:D:D

It seems to be a problem to glue, then paint. My model has several colors (red, silver, black) around the chassis area, and it just doesn't seem that possible to paint after the parts are glued together.

Use some KristalClear...wont affect the paint

Yep...most places should have it in stock.

Yeah... I got some krystal klear and it works pretty good.

Anybody else have suggestions on when to use different types of glue?

Superglue dissolving paint? - that's a new one on me. I suppose there are many different formulations of CA glue around the world and you unfortunately copped a paint dissolving one.

I use lots of differnt glues:

Plastic weld - for bonding styrene, can only use this directly on styrene to styrene joins, before painting.

CA (super) glue - for gluing metal and painted plastic parts (not clear though). Super glue can "fog" so you need to allow for that. Also great for filling gaps and ejector marks.

Epoxy (Araldite) - similar to super glue but allows more time to position and doesn't fog.

PVA - similar to Krystal Klear or Elmers, for very very small PE or clear parts.

I've also used clear paint and Future style floor polish to glue small or clear parts.

What brand of CA do you use that doesn't affect the paint?

Just cheap stuff, budget no-name brands, never had a reaction with paint. What kind of paint do you use, maybe that has something to do with it. I use enamels and lacquers, rarely acrylics.

It was acrylic paint that it was reacting with... I painted some of my model with enamel... I'll do a quick test and see if thats it...

Zap a Gap CA: Reacted w/ acrylic and enamel

Testors Cement: Reacted w/ acrylic and enamel (Like you said)

Local hobby store CA: Didn't react (I guess this is the way i should go then heh)

Yes go with what works, often that is the cheap stuff! The CA glue I use costs about AUS$2 for six tubes :D
