12valve Vs. 16valve

I have a buddy that is thinking of trading his 1994 Jeep Cherokee for a 1990 240sx. I agree that the Jeep shit needs to go and getting in something like a 240 would be a good move. However, I have heard a few things concerning the 12-valve motors. According to a (different) friend that has done pretty extensive research on 240's the 16-valve motor is a much better choice. Not only for the added 15 hp, but he claims the 12's were notorious for having "issues." Quite frankly, I don't want to see my friend that's considering the trade get shat on, so I am curious as to the validity of the 12-valve motor stories that I've heard.

Also, how hard is it to throw a bearing in these motors. I drove the car, and noticed a definate vibration/rattle through the rpm band. It was odd however...it was characteristic of an exhaust leak in how I could evoke the problem, but I have never heard/felt anything like this due to an exhaust. It sounded like a failed/worn out valve lifter or something similar. I only got to fool with it for a few minutes, so I didn't really get a chance to evaluate the car. My personal opinion is he's paying too much for it: About $2,800 - it's a 1990 in ok condition, new paint but overspray everywhere, missing some stupid stuff like an inner fender cover etc... 140,000-ish on the clock and the aparant funky running issue.

Any input on any of these issues would be appreciated....thanks

I paid $2900 for mine, but that was almost 4 years ago and it only had 70K miles, exelent body/paint, just needed tires.

I haven't heard anything about the 12 valve (KA24E) having any issues that the 16 valve (KA24DE) doesn't have, in fact I think I've heard some people complaining about the 16 valve running hotter. He's right about the power though. If they are firm on that price I vote keep looking =p

yeah, I can't find any recalls or bad remarks on the review sites. I'm thinking my boy needs to shop around a little. I don't really know about these motors that much, but then again, I'd have a 98 and do the SR/sylvia conversion......lol

that's way too high, I'd rather just buy a cheap one just for the shell and drop an engine in. That oen seems like it'll be needing a new engine in anyways, and for $2,800, it better have an engine that will last at least 2-4 years

Never buy a car that has issues like the ones your saying..the price is way too high, especially in that condition.

There are many other cars out there. Dont jump on the first one you find thinking it is the last. you will always be able to find a better deal. especially a better deal than that.

never heard about any major faults in the 89-90 setup... but I say buy a shell or one cheap with a dead motor. then sr20det.. if thats an option...

the sr20det can be swapped into an 89-90 240sx without modifications correct?

you have to get power steering lines and reservoir from a 91-94 s13 chassis. other than that it is a winner.
