When the 'check engine' light comes on, turn the car off, pull up the front corner of the passenger side carpet (to expose the ECU), and count the light flashes. The number of flashes tells you what is causing the CE light to come on. Let us know how many flashes there are & we'll be able to help you more....

wcounsil,
i know what it is bro..when your engine is revving up and down like crazy, does it do it on a full stop, slowing down, etc?
and check light comes on..it's your TPS..in other words it's your
Throttle Position Sensor, which if you don't wanna bother with paying anyone to work on it cause they don't think it's the TPS but i know that it is, my 88' civic did that around 160,000 miles too, all i did was i took off the Throttle position sensor and yes the check engine light will still be on but at least your not hearing that annoying revving up and down noise anymore..it works...but you'll have to drive it around for a while so it'll actually quiet down too..
it worked for me..well i hope that helps..
and yeah check the ecu light first..if it flashes 7 times than it's the TPS.
i'm for sure it is..
