I'm in the market for a car, and I'm looing at a 1993 civic cx. Now, i don't know jack about these cars, so I figured I'd come here and ask some questions. First off, how are these cars overall? Ride, fuel mileage, noise.. This will be my first honda, so I'm not sure what to expect. Second, can someone give me some specs on this car, such as engine size, horsepower, etc.. The valvecover on this particular civic said '16 valve' but the only reference to the cx I can find says that the cx's have the 70hp single cam 8 valve engine. Is it possible that someone may have put a different valvecover on this engine, or has an engine change been done perhaps? The car has 348000 km's, but the engine is quiet, runs nice, doesn't rattle or blow smoke or anything like that. The car's overall condition is pretty good, paint is nice, interior is clean, glass is all good, but there are some small rust holes back by the rear fenders. I can probably fix this myself pretty easily, they don't look too bad. The guy selling it says that it takes 30 bucks to fill it (Canadian, gas 78.9 cents per litre) and he gets 600 kilometers to a tank. Would that be considered good mileage for this car? I'm quite impressed by this car, I get my tax return on monday, 1600 bucks, and if I don't find anything better, I'm going to buy it. The guy wants 1600 bucks or best offer, I figure I'll offer him 1300 for it.
got v-tec?

Hmmm... My Helms manual doesn't have a 70 hp engine for a Canadian hatchback; but does have a CX. The reason I say that is I know Canada has some models that are different from in the US. Maybe my manual is wrong.

Is there any way to tell what engine is in this car by looking at it, like some kind of number code or something?

On the front of the block next to the tranny there is a small flat spot, you engine code is ther above the serial number.

The Canadian CX came with a d15b7 (102hp@5900 98@5000 1.5lt 16valve - thanks “got v-tec?”). It’s a close cousin to the USDM (American) DX model. Items that did not come stock were: the rear wiper, passenger side mirror, door moldings, and the rear cargo cover. As for gas mileage 600kms seems high, I have the same car with some engine mods (bolt ons and modified ecu chip) and it costs me $25 CDN for a full tank @ 77.9 cents per litre, and I get somewhere between 450 to 500 kms per tank (I’ve never paid too close attention). My 2cents, hope that helps you out. BTW here is a link for some differences between the USDM HB models http://www.hondaswap.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=29794
