I am replacing the starter on my brothers girlfriends 92 Trooper. Its a 3.2 v6 with 4wd. I unhooked the starter and it is completely free from the engine. I took out the crossmember and some little plate, but i cant seem to get the starter past the oil pan or exhaust pipe. I dont have it on a jack or anything. Any help would be good..

Would love to know what you did. I'm looking at tearing into my 1995 in the morning and from the looks of things will be facing the same problem. Did you have to remove the exhaust? Thanks...

No shortcuts, just did mine. You have to take off the lower piece of the frontpipe otherwise you won't get that starter out.

It is also possible to wiggle it out through the space in front of the axleshaft if you unhook the bolt that holds the steering arm in place and pry that arm out of the way-- you will also have to move the wiring harness over.

I think you are right I remember having a tough time changing it, but seem to remember figuring a way to get it out. I was more peeved about the price of the starter! Not like the old days when you could buy one for 35.00!
